2014 EBR 1190RX First Look

Erik Buell Racing chose the AIMExpo in Orlando to debut its latest superbike offering – the EBR 1190RX. The 2014 model features a number of impressive claims, including 185 crank horsepower and 419-pound weight. But perhaps the most surprising stat is the $18,995 MSRP. EBR has also confirmed at AIM that it will race World Superbike in 2014.

The 1190RX builds off the RS model, but EBR claims development of 426 different parts for its latest offering. Despite the changes, Buell’s signature proprietary components remain, including the fuel-in-the-frame chassis as well as eight-piston caliper and perimeter rotor assembly up front.

EBR claims 185 horsepower from the 1190cc V-Twin powering the RX, with peak torque registering 101.6 lb-ft. Engineers tout the powerplant’s raw power also comes with peak efficiency, citing more than 40 mpg average and as high as 51 mpg on the freeway. The RX power is also metered out by a 21-level traction control – the first EBR production model to incorporate a TC system.

The 419 pound weight claim is without fuel. Top off the 4.5-gallon tank and the RX should tip the scales at 446. EBR states the new frame weighs 23 pounds - sans fuel. Suspension is fully-adjustable Showa, utilizing the Big Piston Fork up front. As mentioned before, EBR’s familiar eight-piston caliper and single disc front brake remains.

The RX’s LED headlamp pumps out the maximum legal limit of  output at 2000 lumens. Even more impressive is behind the controls, where the RX showcases a crisp TFT display.

The 1190RX will retail for $18,995 and be available in three colorways – Galactic Black, Strike Yellow and Racing Red. Units are expected to get released to the growing dealer network by the end of 2013.

EBR’s AIMExpo reveal of the RX to media and prospective dealers drew its biggest response after company reps confirmed the American marque will compete in World Superbike in 2014.

Well, I have to say, they've done a nice job of bringing the bike into a mass production level format at a decent price. The problem is the bikes they compete with: Panagale, S1000RR, MV Augusta, KTM, Aprilia RS4 (even the Factory price has been lowered). I commend Eric on his vision. But it did take a long time (10 years) to get these signature design elements into a true mass produced no excuses superbike (the RS is not at a mass produced price point). I hope they sell. Eric deserves to be successful, especially after the way Harley treated and limited him. I look forward to the tests. But man, is it crowded at the top these days. (which is why Yamaha needs to release that 360lb YZF-R8 triple)

ABN2nds, World SBK allows Twins a 1200cc displacement - with weight handicaps per the Ducati 1199 and 1198.

Why are the front and rear wheels so different? In WSB, are they allowing the Buell to run as a 1200? I thought it was a 1000 class?

I just brought home Buell 1125R over the weekend. It's all the fun I'd hoped it'd be. Great motorcycle.

I can't decide if the front looks more like a KLR or a '99 Ducati Supersport... For the money I'll take a 1290 Superduke R, thank you.

I don't like the way the header tube wraps around over the clutch cover near the frame spar. I'm sure they have tested the design but I see a heat problem with the routing of the header tube. Frames get hot enough from the motor itself why on earth would the snake the header tube through that area? That design isn't very appealing to me, then again Buells have never been at the top of my list as a "MUST HAVE" motorcycle.

I am very excited to hear about the performance of this bike. Unfortunately, the shape of Buell's have never fit me as that sharp tank/frame bend, right where you knees go is too awkward for me. Also, I don't understand that Gi-Normous muffler. That's very 2008. I don't know if you can sell a $20,000 motorcycle unless it looks inspiring (duc/Apr/BMW/etc...) I'm sure a lot will sell because of the novelty or American-ness of it, but performance alone doesn't seem to be enough keep a 20k bike at the top of the heap. But I hope it will in this case.

Looks good for sure.Specs look good. Will perform good??? Can't wait to read a test.... Reliable?? I have many doubts..... To choose that instead of a S1000RR? You must be brave. Where's the naked version?

I love it, but why abandon the Erik Buell signature underbody exhaust? Maybe it just wouldn't fit. But the underbody exhaust is the jackel's cackels.
