retools its UTV lineup in the 2014 model year with its four-seater Pioneer. The new Pioneer side-by-side will replace the popular Big Red
UTV in the brand’s line-up. What makes the Pioneer especially unique is the adaptable design that allows owners the choice of riding with two, three or four seats. The two rear seats fold down without the aid of tools, a first in the class, creating a fully usable bed.
The Pioneer is driven by a 700cc Single and automatic transmission. It was designed with dimensions akin to other two-seaters on the market, which Honda claims adds to the machine’s maneuverability. Big Red also asserts that the Pioneer has a range of up to 7.9 –inches of travel out front, 9.1 in the rear, and claims that the mount provides a “plush ride with class-leading stability.”
“Why Pioneer? Because this machine brings pioneering innovation to the Side-by-Side class,” said Honda Powersports Press Manager, Bill Savino, in a company press release. “Powered by Honda’s fuel-injected 700cc-class liquid-cooled OHV single-cylinder four-stroke engine that features an automotive-style automatic transmission with hydraulic torque converter, three forward gears and reverse, the Pioneer also incorporates industry-leading innovations such as a versatile, adjustable seating configuration that can accommodate two, three or four people. All-new rugged and aggressive styling distinguishes the Pioneer, but it’s the innovative engineering that makes this Side-by-Side unlike anything seen before.”
The Pioneer is geared to serve as a work-horse, with load capacities estimated at 1000 pounds hauling, and up to 1500 pounds towing. There will be a complete line of over 50 aftermarket accessories available and the ride will come in traditional red, green and the trademarked Honda Phantom Camo color scheme. Honda plans to release more information in May of 2013.
