2013 Honda Fury/ Honda Cruisers Introduced

Honda Motorcycles revealed its 2013 cruiser motorcycles today, ranging from its popular mid-range Honda Shadow to its touring capable Interstate. The 2013 Honda Fury features a 21-inch tall front wheel balanced out on the backside by a 200mm rear, all powered by a liquid-cooled 1312cc V-Twin. It is available with factory ABS for $1000 more than its $13,390 MSRP.

proclaimed 250,000 units. Four 2013 Honda VT 1300 models are back for 2013, the larger displacement VT/VTX1300 line good for over 129,000 models sold to date, according to Honda PR.

One motorcycle that’s been helping fuel sales the last couple of years for Honda in the VT1300 line is its raked-out Fury. The 2013 Honda Fury (MSRP $13,390 - $14,390 ABS) continues to sport a 3.4-gallon tank with distinctive lines mounted high on the backbone, opening up the space above the engine and the tubular frame. A 21-inch tall front hoop is kicked out at a 38-degree angle, the chopper-esque dimensions balanced out by the 200mm wide rear. A big 336mm disc with twin-piston calipers anchors the front while the single-piston arrangement on the rear clamps down on a healthy 296mm disc. ABS is an option that can be added for an extra $1000. The 45mm front fork sports 4.0 inches of travel while the single shock on the rear has five-way spring preload adjustability. Its five-speed gearbox is smooth and reliable while the Fury handles much better than you’d expect for a bike with such a heavy rake. And while factory custom chopper manufacturers have been dropping like flies, the Honda Fury continues to sell well enough to continue making it back into production since its 2010 introduction. It helps that the Fury’s price point hasn’t jumped up much since its release, the 2013 MSRP of $13,390 only $391 more than the 2010 Honda Fury.

The 2013 Honda Shadow 750cc cruiser line consists of four models, from the low-slung Aero to the blacked-out Phantom. Where the 2013 Honda Aero features full fenders, spoked wheels and chromed 2-into-2 exhaust, the 2013 Phantom sports a beefier fork, a blacked-out 745cc engine, frame, rims and handlebars to go along with chopped fenders. The 2013 Shadow Spirit 750 has the lowest seat height of the bunch at 25.7 inches and a taller 21-inch front wheel while the 2013 Shadow RS has a flatter seat, higher-set footpegs, shorter, more upright bars and a smaller 2.6-gallon peanut-shaped tank.

The 2013 VT1300 line includes four varieties, all powered by Honda’s liquid-cooled 1312cc V-Twin fed by Programmed Fuel Injection. The 2013 Sabre is the brawniest of the bunch with its trimmed down fenders and five-spoke cast wheels. The 2013 Stateline is more traditionally dressed in longer, valanced fenders and a meatier 140mm front tire (compared to the 90mm front on the Sabre) while the 2013 Interstate comes road-ready with a removable windscreen, floorboards and saddlebags. The Stateline is the most affordably priced with an MSRP ranging from $12,150 - $13,150 while the 2013 Sabre is priced comparably from $12,250 - $13,250. The touring amenities of the 2013 Interstate bump the MSRP on the final VT1300 model up to $13,240 - $14,240.

After a very bad year of new bikes not working out (either a lemon or couldn't get comfortably seated), I decided to not spend so much, again, and downsize with a return to cruisers. I'd quit Honda back in 2009 in near disgust at the boring direction of their bikes and cars. The VTX I'd had from 2007-2009 was an ok bike, but power to weight was not good. I read all the stuff about Honda's weaksauce engines, but took a chance on it over a Stryker because of a seemingly good dealership. So, my return to Honda in June of 2014 was...a big mistake. I'm stuck with the bike now for a few years until we get stuff paid off. In the meantime, I'll try hard to make the best of it on this 2013 model Honda Sabre VT1300. I have to say it is a nice looking bike, but that's about it. Handling is decent for a cruiser. Stock seat was a joke, unbelievably bad. 15-inch rear wheel has been around on Hondas since the 1980s, maybe before. Parts bin stuff from the same era abounds. The power of the 1300 engine is...I don't even have a comment that hits the nail on the head. After having bikes like FZ1, Z1000, VTX 1800, Raider, Magna, I knew the new Honda 1300 would be an "adjustment", but I didn't know just how weak these engines really were. At least if I went for a Stryker, Ivan's Performance's ECU fix would have given me a very strong 1300 cruiser, beating out the Honda by 20-30 HP and 10+ TQ, depending on mods. I look forward to the day that we are again debt free so that I can correct this great mistake. Honda, get a grip. Your engines, still needing valve checks every 8k miles? What in the heck is that about? No adjustment for rear shock pre-load? STILL no way to avoid major gas spillage when taking off the tank? These are insult to injury. Get a grip Honda, get competitive. You've definitely lost a customer, again. Very unhappy, overall, with the performance of this machine. And yes...cheap plastic covers...gosh...see this stuff on paper, get into the bike in-person, it all gets driven home...that I paid too much for a knock-off toy. Honda has rolled far from excellence. Reliable? Maybe, sure. Exciting? Not at all. Inspiring? Only to a limited degree with what few aftermarket parts there are in comparison to other brands.

The Fury was my first bike. I had fun with it and it was great for a beginner. But I was not upset to see it go and get a bike that has a much bigger engine. That 1312cc just does not cut it. I think a lot of people, like me, will get bored with this bike as time goes on.

IN my opinion the Fury would be a much stronger sale if Honda would change those ugly mufflers, that's the reason I didn't buy one, it's a good looking bike, so why not put sharp mufflers on it.

Fair point, Mitch - as I said, the styling is great, it's what you see when you give it a closer look that sort of turns me off. I hear it sells well, but I don't know about in this part of the country (New England) - I think I've seen three total since 2010 around here.

Say what you will about the Fury but you can't deny it's been a strong seller for Honda since it's release. Not everyone (the majority of the market) can afford or build their own chopper, which has lead to the eventual demise of most companies that sell them. Honda however has found a way of making a profit in this market so I say more power to them.

Piglet, Yea, that would work, there is a huge market for longitude V twin cruisers. Honda already has tons of left over bikes they cannot sell. This will put them over the top! That is really out there, even for you Piglet.

90° V-twins work fine in a cruiser. Just mount the engine longitudinally like a Moto Guzzi.

You are right, this is the VT line, VTX ahs not exsisted for years. Also, Piglet, 90* V twins do not work well in Classic cruisers and choppers. The VTR is not a good motor for this tyle of bike.

I think the article has some incorrect information. Everywhere it says VTX1300, it should really say VT1300.

I think it is obvious that Honda no longer makes cruisers a priorty. Too busy building all those goofy looking, slow selling commuter bikes. VFR1200 and NC700x. Maybe that is why there is no Honda dealer in Orlando!

Honda should take the V-twin from the VTR1000F and increase the stroke for 1,200cc displacement - would be good for about 90HP and 80 lb-ft at the rear wheel.

Re: the Fury - sorry , still not impressed. I have nothing against Hondas (owned a great Shadow Spirit once upon a time), but the Fury is all show and now go. The styling is great; I'll concede that, but look closely and there's WAAAY too much plastic - even the "chrome" cylinder toppers are plastic. Add to that shaft drive, which limits aftermarket mods, and a too-weak powerplant, and this is a chopper at first glance only.
