Jimmy Button underwent surgery on Friday for a broken elbow sustained during his Miles for Miracles charity ride.
Former Supercross champ Jimmy Button suffered a broken elbow this Thursday while on Day 30 of his Miles for Miracles bicycle ride. While leaving a rest stop in Liberty, TX, Button tipped over when he couldn’t get his foot out of his pedal quick enough to catch himself. He hit the ground hard with his left side, fracturing his left elbow. After a trip to the local hospital, Button flew back home to San Diego for surgery on Friday afternoon. The surgery went well, and the prognosis is good for a short recovery.
A post on Button’s Miles for Miracles Blog stated, “This surgery wouldn’t have been Dr. Murphy’s first option but since Jimmy’s desire is to get back on the bike as soon as possible to finish the ride, this would work best. It will have a bigger scar and be more painful in the long run but it would be stronger in a short amount of time. After surgery Dr. Murphy said that things had gone better than he had expected and should heal faster and better that he had initially thought.”
Button began his ride to raise one million dollars for spinal cord injury research last month from San Diego. In January of 2000 while a Yamaha factory racer, a crash in practice caused serious injury to Button-Fly’s spinal cord rendering him an incomplete quadriplegic. Many months of rehab allowed JB to regain movement of his arms and legs.
As soon as he is able to ride, Button will return to Liberty to finish the remainder of the ride to Daytona International Speedway. Donations to the cause can be made by visiting the Miles for Miracles Home Page or by texting BIKE to 86944. A five-dollar donation enters you to win either a replica San Manuel Yamaha YZ450F or Sette Forza bicycle.
