The FDNY group seeks help in cities along the route to raise funds for wounded/military families.
On Friday, August 9, 2013, four members of the FDNY will start their 15-day motorcycle ride across the country to raise funds and awareness for Hope For The Warriors. The FDNY Southern Rumble will cover more than 5,300 miles, stops in 15 cities, and visits to two military medical centers. Hope For The Warriors is a national nonprofit organization that assists post-9/11 service members, their families, and families of the fallen who have sustained physical and psychological wounds in the line of duty.
The FDNY Southern Rumble is organized by Chris Walsh. Walsh was an officer in the Marine Corps from 1991 – 1995. He began working as a firefighter in early 2001, nine months before the fateful events of 9/11. In 2002, he received an offer to reactivate as a Marine. With the memory of 9/11 forever fresh in his mind, he returned to the Marine Corps and soon after deployed to Iraq. Walsh finished his deployment and returned to the FDNY.
Walsh is joined by three other men who have worked as firefighters for many years. All are dedicated to supporting wounded service members and military families. They have worked hard to generate donations for Hope For The Warriors as well as donations to cover their expenses.
This is the second year that the group is doing the Rumble. Last year’s ride raised more than $18K; the group has set a goal of $20K for the FDNY Southern Rumble.
"[We’re just] doing what every American should do, saying thank you to our heroes, to those who provide us with the freedom that we enjoy every day,” Walsh said. “Freedom is not free."
Events kick off on Saturday, August 3 with a fundraising party at Bourbon Street Bar & Grille in Monroe, NY . The route for the FDNY Southern Rumble includes stops in: Ashville, NC; Nashville, TN; Memphis, TN; Dallas, TX; Austin, TX; New Orleans, LA; Montgomery, AL; Gainesville, FL; Sarasota, FL; Key West, FL; Daytona, FL; Fayetteville, NC; and Bethesda, MD.
