Pope Francis' 2013 Harley Dyna Super Glide Custom sold for serious money today at Bonhams' Les Grandes Marques du Monde auction, the anonymous telephone bidder putting out €241,500 for the motorcycle signed by its former owner.
Pope Francis’ 2013 Dyna Super Glide Custom raised big bucks for charity today during Bonhams’ Les Grandes Marques du Monde sale in the Grand Palais. According to a Bonhams press release, the Harley-Davidson sold for €241,500 ($328,126 US Dollars) to an unknown telephone bidder from Europe after a six-minute long bidding war. The motorcycle was signed by Pope Francis and came with a certificate of conformity from Harley-Davidson. It was presented to the Pope last summer during Harley’s 110th anniversary celebration in Rome.

A leather motorcycle jacket, a former possession also signed by Pope Francis, fetched a hefty €57,500 ($78,125) at the Bonhams’ auction. The jacket sold to a different overseas bidder.

“I am thrilled with the result achieved and am very pleased for the charity. It has to be a world record for a twenty-first century Harley-Davidson and certainly for a Harley-Davidson leather jacket,” said Ben Walker, head of motorcycles at Bonhams.

The Pope’s Harley and leather jacket were the first two lots up for bid in an auction that saw 45 collectible motorcycles go under the hammer. With hundreds in attendance, Bonhams reported a loud cheer filled the Grand Palais after the bidding war for the motorcycle.

Money raised from the auction goes towards renovating Caritas Roma’s Don Luigi di Liegro hostel and soup kitchen at Rome’s Termini railway station. The hostel and soup kitchen provide shelter and food for an estimated 1000 people daily.

“We are delighted with the results of the sale, which far exceeded any of our expectations,” said Enrico Feroci, director of Caritas Roma.
