2012 KTM Two Stroke SX First Looks

Wednesday, May 18, 2011
The 125 SX returns to KTMs U.S. model line-up for 12.
KTM’s entire two-stroke line gets an updated linkage-equipped rear suspension.
KTM is one of two motorcycle manufacturers that still offer full-size two-stroke dirt bikes for U.S. consumption. For 2012 the SX motocross line grows with the return of the 125 expanding the model lineup to three based on engine displacement (125, 150 and 250). Additionally each bike gets some engine and chassis updates for improved performance on the racetrack and trail.

Starting with the chassis, engineers have modified the steel frame to support its new linkage-equipped rear suspension system that was introduced on the 2011 SX-F four-stroke line. Correspondingly, a new WP gas-charged shock and swingarm were also fitted. Other changes to the chassis include an updated seals and bushing set-up inside the 48mm diameter WP fork. Lastly the rear brake master cylinder is also new.

High-quality components are a hallmark trade of KTM dirt bikes and the SX line continues to roll on Excel wheels paired to CNC-machined aluminum hubs shod in Pirelli Scorpion tires (80/100-21 fronts and 100/90-19 rears on the 125/150 and a 110/90-19 on the 250 SX). More premium componentry comes in the form of Brembo calipers actuated through steel-braided brake lines.

In the powertrain department the 125 ($6,299) and 150 ($6,399) get reshaped kickstart levers. The 150 also receives an updated pipe while the 250 ($6,899) gets a revised reed block said to enhance the powerband. Each model also gets a reshaped airbox for improved overall engine performance. As always each bike comes equipped with a high-quality Twin Air foam air filter that can be accessed and removed easily without any tools. Bikes should begin rolling into KTM dealers circa June, 2011.
