2014 KTM 1190 Adventure Moto Stability Control

under any conditions. KTM is touting the system’s effectiveness particularly when cornering, reportedly “preventing wheels from slipping while leaned over” and keeping bikes from standing up abruptly when a rider hits the brakes while correcting the bike when leaned over.

According to BOSCH’s video explaining the new MSC, the system is constantly pouring over a list of data including wheel speed, lean angle, pitch angle, acceleration, braking pressure and other parameters. If it recognizes anomalies, it will automatically intervene but KTM states it is designed to work in the background without being overly intrusive.

KTM says its MSC will:
• prevent wheels from slipping when braking while leaned over, avoiding low-side crashes;
• minimize the motorcycle’s attempt to right itself when braking during a lean, thus helping decrease turn radius;
• prevent rolling over in emergency stops;
• distribute brake force to front and/or rear brakes, even when only one is applied;
• prevent wheelies while accelerating, and
• prevent rear wheel skids when accelerating while leaning.

The 2014 KTM 1190 Adventure and 2014 Adventure R continue to source a 75-degree V-Twin churning out a claimed 150 hp. A ride-by-wire system controls its 52mm Keihin throttle bodies for quick response to throttle input. The 1190 Adventure is outfitted with a hydraulically controlled slipper clutch and electronically adjustable WP suspension front and back. KTM lists the 2014 1190 Adventure’s weight at 230 kg (507 pounds), but whether that’s curb weight or dry is unknown. Regardless, the MSC has added a few pounds as the 2013 Adventure R is claimed to weigh 467 pounds dry. KTM states its MSC can be retrofitted on 2013 1190 Adventure and Adventure R models.

The 2014 KTM 1190 Adventure should stack up competitively against Ducati’s Multistrada 1200, the Italian ADV bike equipped with a Ducati Safety Pack that has its own sophisticated electronics package integrating data from its Ducati Traction Control, ABS, riding modes and Ducati Skyhook Suspension to keep riders in control.

KTM will begin producing the 2014 1190 Adventure models equipped with MSC in December. Prices listed for the German market are €13,995 (US$18,880) and €15,495 (US$20,900) for the 2014 1190 Adventure R.

Seriously??? How about all of the electronically assisted functions of your bike, are they not all "operating in the background"? And if you are wondering how the new ABS system works in gravel, or on downhill washboard, why not just read one of the independent professional rider reviews on the new 1190? I recall several of them stating that, "surprisingly, it works really well in all of the off-road conditions (we)experienced". I am not associated with KTM in any way, I just had to add my two cents. Hope I didn't offend anyone:)

Seriously what the hell does "in the background" mean in the context of riding a motorcycle? Seems to me that everything is happening right there in the foreground. But maybe that's just me. Certainly the KTM marketing group doesn't feel that way.

" Oh, "in the background", without being OVERLY intrusive. I get it. Now if we can just figure out what this all means in the real-world. That all sounds fine and dandy for a road bike, but how will all those electronics work off road??? Ever try to stop a vehicle with ABS on a downhill washboard with loose gravel???
