The King of motard is now the Queen of negative acceleration.
introduced the KTM 990 SM T with the addition of dual-channel ABS system engineered by Bosch at the INTERMOT show this week. The ABS system keeps KTM big-bore motard riders a little safer as they try to slow down this wild beast. KTM calls the SM T a long-distance supermoto, and now it can claim that it can be ridden in any weather as well as for any purpose.
Just how good are the brakes? KTM calls its new SM T the “Queen of negative acceleration.” The ABS system is designed specifically to be as minimal as possible to allow for aggressive supermoto riding using what KTM dubs “rollover detection.” It can be turned off manually for stints in the dirt. Radial four-piston Brembo calipers squeeze dual 305mm discs up front. The rear is a two-piston floating Brembo caliper and 240mm rotor.
Hooligans will appreciate the 7.7 inches of ground clearance and a wheelie-poppin’ 115 claimed horsepower. With a tank-empty weight of 437 pounds (also claimed), there’s no denying this bike will get up and move. Fed by a 48mm throttle body Keihin EFI, the liquid-cooled, DOHC 75-degree V-Twin engine hangs exposed from a chromoly trellis frame suspended by WP suspension components. A 48mm fork handles the front end where 6.9 inches of travel handle anything the road can throw at it along with 7.3 inches of movement from the shock.
The ABS can be turned off when it comes time to explore off-road.
With a six-speed transmission, upright seating position and host of bolt-on goodies from the PowerParts catalog, the SM T could very well prove to be the ultimate street bike.
