Lead Ban Petition from Tom Self

Wednesday, February 11, 2009
As of Tuesday, February 10th, 2009, the small powersports industry has all but been shut down. This affects not only dealers and new units but individuals all across the U.S. New and used units as well as parts availability for every used unit in the nation has been called under question. This issue is far reaching not only financially but also concerning safety. With the suspension of proper sized ATV's and motorcycles suspended, young riders will be tempted to use improperly sized and built machines which could (but Lord willing won't) lead to severe injuries.

There is a waiver now setting before the Consumer Product Safety Commission in Washington DC, but has not been acted upon as of yet. We need every available rider, Mother, Father, Grandmother, Grandfather, Aunt, Uncle and any relative, friend neighbor, business or personal contact or any person who is a legal us citizen to get involved. They need to access this website, read the sample letter, type in their name and address then click the "send a letter on my behalf" icon below it. This will generate correspondence to all the committee members in Washington that are on the committee that oversee the commission that could act upon this. The commission members as well as my office will also receive copies of the letters set so we can be the most effective voice we that we can. The sport as well as the industry is in turmoil and time is short. The future of small powersports is at risk! PLEASE ACT NOW!!

I’m sure you have heard this news, and I apologize if you have already received this. This is very important to our industry so I URGE you to please take less than a minute to sign this petition. Below is the petition and here is the link:

Luisa Vela -Lead Ban  June 8, 2009 03:49 PM
Ok Now wait a minute, I'm very insulted. We as responsible parents are being undermined. Do you honestly think I'm going to let my 9 yr old daughter eat lead off the engine of her dirt bike? Please! She is even smarter than that and has never tried to touch the engine let alone lick it...This is an Absolute rediculous Ban..I thought we lived in America. Things are slowly being taken away from us, and WHY? This happens to be a fun family event for me, my daughter, and her father. I enjoy it very much and so does she. We all wear the protective gear as so does millions of other people who participate in this sport. Gloves, clothing, chest protector, boots, Helmet. I know when I take my daughters helmet off is because she's done riding and wants a drink of water or something to eat (like a sandwich, not Lead) Please, Your affecting so many people whom already own bikes for there kids, and for future potential riders. What about the dealers? They already have the bikes on there floor waiting to be sold. Did you forget we're at an economic crisis? Do you want more business's out of Business? Thats where its headed. IF I SOUND ANGRY, IS BECAUSE I'AM.
Eddie Thomas -lead ban  May 19, 2009 11:30 AM

I think this is rediculous, and it needs to be reversed immediately.I am a father of three girls, one of which rides and two more that will be ready soon. This is what big government is doing to help the sluggish economy. THANK'S. Let Washington know where us hard working Americans stand, and like someone else said. We all vote!
Rodney Delker -Youth motorcycle bike ban  April 1, 2009 09:05 AM

Pedro Ibanez -atv ban ( show me the lead !!!! )  March 25, 2009 11:47 PM
Out of curiosity where is the lead located on these vehicles? Is it the lead acid batteries on the electric start models? most are sealed gel.If so why does this effect kick start magnito style ignition? Is there a lead content in the engine cases mixed in the aluminum? There are the same materials located and used in any typical automobile, train ,airplane or boat which thousands or millions of children have access daily. Are you going to ban children to ride in such vehicles? Most hydrid vehicle contain more lead due to the battery power source for the electric motor if they use lead acid batteries, but if they do connect each cell with lead bars I see a problem with lead residue,I have participated in a few mini cycle event where children and families race at there local tracks( good clean fun in the dirt )This ban may kill that! In many states a sticker program is in effect to allow ohv's to ride in state parks plus enterance fee, that state revenue will be decreased, (state loss of income),sales taxes on each sale will be lost ( state loss of income )there are manufacturers that employe thousands of people that may lose their jobs and their income which in turn ( state loss of income ) there will be less fuel purchases ( state loss of income ) California is in a big enough hole, this industry still seems to thrive in this recession, for now , I've riddin since I was 12 , my children were riding at 8 & 6, They are now 27 & 25 with children ,we all ride , my grandchildren have been introduced to it and love it,they are 3 & 2 I hoped to let them ride at 5 yrs old. So all I ask is ( SHOW ME THE LEAD ) I know cycles can be made without lead, show me the ingestion danger to justify the ban and then maybe we will let Clarence Thomas and party decide.
Jamie Heaton -Lead Ban  March 25, 2009 11:41 AM
Please lift the lead ban on childrens motorcycles. The lead in the bikes doesn't harm anybody. The ban is destroying our powersports industry.

Kevin Gamble -lead ban  March 22, 2009 04:26 PM
They better ban the auto industry, my kids are more apt to go in the driveway and lick my truck, than suck on an exhaust pipe of any motorcycle, big or small.
Robert Northington -lead ban and kids under 12yrs on motorcycles  March 22, 2009 03:19 PM
How did the two get in the same law anyway? The only thing lead on bikes is the inside of acid filled batteries = not good to eat. Are the people making the laws idiots? Motorcycling is a great family sport so come on ya'll don't let this continue.
Mark Franklin -Lead Ban  March 22, 2009 03:18 PM

seth mccoy -lead ban  March 11, 2009 06:36 AM
How is it that the motorcycle companies did not know about this, and if so why didnt they inform us. This is crap. Lets turn this thing around. It sounds like it was a stupid mistake that the bikes fell into this ban. I would like to think that there is some common sense in this government, but this shows that they are all freaking idiots.
