Why not test the Metzler or Continental in the next shootout.... or even throw the Shinko in as a wildcard to see how it stacks up against the big brands? I've never been to a track day but have done some running in twisties and even swapped bikes with friends before....I have to agree with the lack of being impressed by Avons.
