New Water-cooled Piston 2-Stroke on Tap
Friday, August 14, 2009

This new 2-stroke engine from Pivotal Engineering could revolutionize how many vehicles run, but it might be a while before it is sourced in a mainstream motorcycles design.
New Zealand-based Pivotal Engineering is currently testing a 2-stroke engine with a pivoting water-cooled piston which is claimed will eliminate the negative aspects of the ‘stroker’ engine. The design also uses direct injection to help clean up emission.
Currently a 951 cc Rotax based twin-cylinder is giving 120 hp at 6,500 rpm, but before you get too excited the reality is that the design will be used for buses and other applications, long before it find its way into a two-wheeler. The designer, Paul McLaughlan is hopeful that when development costs has been recouped, that it can move towards bikes, especially as it readily runs on hydrogen and natural gas which further expands its versatility.
