2009 Yamaha YW125 Scooter Recall Notice

Thursday, February 14, 2013

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall notice regarding a fuel pump issue with certain model year 2009 Yamaha YW125 (Zuma 125) scooters manufactured between July 2008 and April 2009. According to the notice, “possible improper clearances in the internal fuel pump components…may cause an inadequate supply of fuel.” The issue may cause performance problems, including engine stalling, which increase the potential for a crash.

According to the factory modification campaign issued by Yamaha, “a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in all 2009 YW125Y (Zuma 125) model scooters” and that “scooters that are affected should not be operated until they are modified.” Dealers will receive notification of affected models invoiced to their dealership and registered owners can expect notification directly by mail. The current estimate lists 8,700 affected units, though the number may change following completion of a supplemental VIN range report.

Owners of affected models can contact Yamaha directly at 1-800-962-7926. More information can also be found at NHTSA’s website, www.safecar.gov, or by calling the Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. The NHTSA campaign ID number for the recall is 13V035000.
