Jessica Patterson followed up her overall wins at Hangtown and Freestone with another victory in Colorado.
In the high altitude and thin air of Lakewood, Colorado it was Red Bull Honda Racing’s Ashley Fiolek who opened the first WMX moto with a holeshot ahead of Yamaha’s Jessica Patterson followed by Kawasaki’s Sara Price. Sarah Whitmore and Alexah Pearson remained close behind in fourth and fifth, respectively. After leading the race for only a few short turns Fiolek went down and struggled to get back on her bike as multiple riders rode over her Honda CRF250R. Taking over for Fiolek was the WMX Championship leader Patterson, who immediately began pulling ahead of Price and the rest of the pack.
Outside of the top-five, Tarah Geiger began reeling in Vicki Golden for sixth-place on the second lap. At the same time Fox Racing’s Jacqueline Strong made a pass on Whitmore for third, but it was short-lived as Whitmore and her KTM 250 SX-F refused to be pushed off the podium. The two traded places multiple times and in the end it was Strong making her pass on Whitmore stick for third-place.
Meanwhile, Patterson continued separating herself from the pack by increasing her lead to over nine seconds ahead of Price in second.
With just a few laps to go Geiger made the move on Whitmore to take fourth-place. As the race neared its end Patterson’s lead had opened up to over 18 seconds over the rest of the field. After falling Fiolek led an impressive comeback throughout the race and near the end made an aggressive pass on Golden. Running a strong and consistent race behind Patterson was Price who remained in second until the checkers.
After the second moto was delayed due to inclement weather, Patterson and Geiger launched out of the gates to take the top-two spots followed by Mariana Balbi. Rounding out the top-six in the opening lap were Price, Whitmore and Fiolek.
Suffering a harsh Moto 2 was Geiger who was trailing Patterson when she took a hard fall that pushed her back to 10th.
With Geiger out of the equation Price took over second behind Patterson, but it was too late as the #2 bike of Patterson was way out in front with an enormous lead.
By the time the race had reached the halfway mark Price was overtaken by Fiolek who started the race back in sixth. In a race that saw a lot of exchanges between the top-five riders Whitmore and Golden were able to make the pass on Price, pushing her back to fifth.
During a late moto charge for Strong she advanced to fifth-place ahead of Price with the white flag out. Taking the win in Moto 2 and making it a 1-1 day was Patterson, followed by Fiolek in second. Despite falling back to sixth late in Moto 2, Price took third overall after a 2-6 score. Rounding out the top-five overall finishers were Strong and Whitmore who took fourth and fifth, respectively.
