Honda Red Bull's Ashley Fiolek took the Moto 1 win but couldn't hold off Jessica Patterson in the second contest.
After a long break in the MotoUSA.com WMX
Championship series, ladies took to the track once again in Massachusetts for Round 6 at Southwick. In the last round at Spring Creek, DNA Shred Stix Yamaha
’s Jessica Patterson took the overall. In this round, the result was the same. In the first contest of the day Honda
Red Bull Racing’s Ashley Fiolek took her customary holeshot. A major pileup occurred with seven riders, one of which was Patterson. Up front Fiolek was followed by Tarah Geiger, Marissa Markelon and Monster Energy Kawasaki
’s Sara Price while Patterson struggled her way into sixth-place.
With half the moto down Price and MotoConcepts Yamaha rider Mariana Balbi began duking it out for fourth place. Shortly afterward Geiger crashed while in second, but she managed to quickly recover and only lost one position. After making a dash through the field and putting together laps a full five seconds faster than the other riders, Patterson moved into second with just minutes remaining. While Patterson was able to chisel away at Fiolek’s 15-second lead, she was unable to make up the difference and Fiolek took the win in the first moto. Geiger rounded out the podium in third and was followed by Price and Balbi who took fourth and fifth, respectively.
After taking a 2-1 result for the day Jessica Patterson took the overall at Southwick and leads the championship by 22 points.
Late in the afternoon Fiolek had another great start out of the gate to once again take the holeshot and early lead. This time, however, Patterson earned a much better start and was riding Fiolek’s rear wheel just seconds into Moto 2. In third was Warthog Racing’s Tatum Sik followed by Geiger, Markelon and Jagermeister KTM
’s Sarah Whitmore. After finishing Moto 1 in fourth, Price had a difficult start and was struggling back in eighth.
At the close of the opening lap Patterson rocketed past Fiolek for the lead, and shortly after Fiolek made an unsuccessful attempt to take it back. Patterson began pulling away from Fiolek and the rest of the field. Whitmore was also on the move and advanced into fifth place ahead of Markelon while laying down some of the fastest laps in the process. Heading into the final laps of the race the order was Patterson followed by Fiolek, Sik, Geiger, Whitmore and Markelon. Geiger made a final push to move into third ahead of Sik, who was also passed by Whitmore which dropped her back to fifth.
With Patterson running more than 24 seconds ahead of her competition the Yamaha rider easily claimed the victory ahead of Fiolek and Geiger. Patterson took her fifth overall victory of the ‘10 season ahead of Fiolek, with Geiger bringing home two solid third-place finishes for third overall.
