Day 2 - Exploring Around San Isidro
Brian screamed like a girl when this blue-feathered warrior
started pecking at his arms during a lunch stop.
After a big breakfast we headed out for a 50-mile run exploring the vicinity of San Isidro, including a 6000-foot descent to the floor of Urique Canyon. We were invited into a one-room adobe house, where the whole family lived in a space roughly the size of Brian’s 10’ x 10’ bedroom back home. The house had a tin roof held up by wood branches. When it rains, the floor turns to mud, but they had a million-dollar view with no neighbors in sight. The problem with such a nice view is that the house was near the top of the canyon, where it snows in the winter. Staring at large gaps in their walls, I wondered how tough life was when the temps drop.
We stopped at a local restaurant for lunch at the bottom of the canyon, where a overfriendly bird took a liking to Brian. The bright blue-feathered warrior pecked at Brian’s worm-like arms. Brian must have thought the bird had razorblades for teeth because he screamed like a little girl, again and again.
After lunch, Brian got a little birdbath. I had him stop in the middle of a river crossing to get a good photo. Then Pete came roaring by for a full throttle splashing. I still can’t believe he fell for it…
