2013 Kawasaki Teryx4 Archery Voyage

Kawasaki recently invited MotoUSA on one of the most breathtaking adventures we’ve ever been on. We hopped in the driver’s seat of the 2013 Teryx4 on some of the most, amazing trail systems in West Virginia. Afterwards we mixed it up with an evening of archery with World Games Gold Medalist Kevin Wilkey, we’re not sure if it gets any better.

The venue for this adventure was West Virginia’s Hatfield McCoy Trails. The off-road trails were created by the state legislature to spawn tourist development in the great outdoors. Open 365 days a year, the trails offer a diverse variety of terrain ranging from easy, wide, smooth trails to extremely difficult wet and rocky trails and is a must visit for any dirt riding enthusiast. Currently there are eight trail networks to choose from but each serve up a great time no matter what you ride or drive.

Our weapon for the trek was Kawi’s latest flagship Teryx4 750 EPS LE, side-by-side. Its powered by a liquid-cooled 749cc V-Twin engine providing excellent torque that conquers every bit of terrain that the Hatfield McCoy Trails threw at us. Hop in the four-seat UTV and turn the key, and the electric start system brings the beast to life. Power is unleashed instantaneously as soon as the gas pedal is mashed, presenting its massive wave of torque from the get-go.

Fortunately we were able to drive the flashy Sunrise Yellow LE edition. Included in this model are tasteful 12-spoke cast aluminum wheels as well as a sun top over the roll cage to provide protection from sun and rain. Also included are body matching doors, keeping the Teryx looking good no matter how dirty we managed to get it. The doors are also a great safety feature protecting the driver and passengers from debris and even harm in a roll-over. But our favorite feature on this side-by-side is the electronic power steering which provides easy steering control over bumps and pot holes, ensuring a safe, fun trail ride no matter what obstacles lay in front of you.

We are also pleased with the cockpit of the Teryx4. Access into the cab is as simple as opening up the door and getting in, just like you’d expect from the car you drive to work in every day. The two-tone bucket seats provide insanely good amounts of cushion unlike some of the machine’s competitors. The bottom cushion in particular acts like an extra shock absorber when landing off big hits or rolling over G-out spots on the trail.

A dash mounted switch enables the driver to switch between 2WD and 4WD settings. A quick flip of the switch (under 12mph) and the drivetrain switch happens immediately. Front differential lock, for maximum traction, can also be accessed through the same system.
 
The wide body chassis keeps the Teryx stable through all the elements, from aggressive cornering to rough and bumpy high speed straight-aways with very little body roll. Part of the reason for it’s extra good handling is its chassis. Unlike some of its top competitors, Kawasaki has integrated an ultra-strong Double-X frame design with two X-shaped cross members that bridge the frame structure from corner to corner.

Although we would have liked some more seat time in the 2013 Teryx4, the boys at Kawi had a different plan for us. After a few hours of trail shredding, skid plate scraping, and mud eating fun, the second half of our day included something a little different. We had a few guests on our trip, one being World Champion Archer Kevin Wilkey. Also on the guest list were the boys from Realtree, the creator and marketer of the world’s most versatile camo patterns, and archery target manufacturer Delta McKenzie Targets.
 
Hoyt Archery, a leader in the bow industry along with the leading archery target manufacturer, Delta McKenzie treated us to an incredible afternoon of archery shooting with professional instruction with top-of-the-line equipment. Hoyt introduced us to its different products from highly technical compound bows to your indian style recurve bow.

Delta McKenzie brought out some of its most popular models of targets including an array of deer and boar targets as well as the oh-so-popular Undead Fred zombie target. After hours of shooting, the targets were taunting us “archers” with “is that all you got?” as they still looked like new even after hundreds of arrows had been put into them.
 
If you’re ever wondering what the perfect day consists of you might want to follow these guidelines: First you’re going to want to haul out a Teryx4, grab some of your best friends, and hit the most incredible network of riding trails imaginable. After climbing mountains and blasting through streams until your clothes are soaked and toes wrinkled from being wet all-day the final step is to hit the archery range. Grab the best bows on the market along with the coolest, most durable targets, throw on your Realtree camo gear and shoot arrows until your shoulders can’t take it anymore. Let the good times roll!
