After impressive fill-in rides at the end of this season, Aprilia has signed young British rider Leon Camier for the 2010 season.
Aprilia announced late last week that British star Leon Camier will be joining
Max Biaggi on its factory World Superbike squad for 2010.
The 23-year-old Englishman comes fresh off winning the British Superbike crown in dominating fashion, with an unheard of 18 wins in 26 races, a new BSB record (he also holds a British Supersport crown from 2005). Camier then jumped up a series and rode in place of Aprilia's injured Shinya Nakano the final two races of this past World Superbike season, impressing with a sixth and seventh at the final round in Portimao, Portugal.
Camier, who has tested on the
RSV4 Superbike several times since the final races, said in a personal press release: “Man, I’m just relieved and excited to get things really going. We have a press launch first then we go to Valencia to test on December 9 and 10. I can't wait to keep up the progression where we left off. In these tests we can sort of try some bigger things, make some bigger changes and hope to get something done a bit quicker, really.”
With his addition it makes for a total of six British riders in the series for 2010: Along with Camier, Leon Haslam of Alstare Suzuki, Shane Byrne on the Althea Ducati, Hannspree Ten Kate Honda’s Jonathan Rea and James Toseland and Cal Crutchlow riding the Yamaha World Superbikes. This is the most for any single county in the series.
In response to this, Leon added, “If you are beating the Brits you will be beating most of the field. There will be a lot of them in the series. I have raced against most of them before and it is confidence inspiring for me to see them doing it and now I get the chance to be doing it too. The goal is to be up front and winning races, no question.”
