World Superbike Valencia Test Day 1

Wednesday, December 09, 2009
Leon Haslam Honda : It took me a few laps to get into it but I was able to run a good pace. The pace in the end of the race was definitely good enough for a place on the rostrum. To finish the second race in seventh place is a good enough result so I am pretty happy.
Haslam quickly adapts to his new
Suzuki ride as he tops the first day
of testing.
Haslam sets the pace

Leon Haslam gave the rest of the WSB paddock something to think about after topping the timesheets in day one of testing at Valencia. The 26 year old is clearly loving life in the factory Suzuki team after racing for the privateer Stiggy Honda squad in 2010. Along with new teammate Sylvan Guintoli, Haslam has benefited from the most testing, having completed a successful three-day test at Phillip Island last month.

At the Australia test Suzuki made the decision to drop Showa suspension in favor of factory Ohlins, a decision that has been vindicated by Haslam’s impressive testing results.

He said: “The times are good but we need to keep pushing. I’ve been looking at the race times Haga did here in the race with the old tyres and we’ve still got some way to go. I’ll be faster tomorrow.”

Fast start for Biaggi
Italian Max Biaggi was the fastest rider during Brnos Friday practice sessions aboard the Aprilia RSV4 - Brno 2009
After a fourth place finish in points last season on his new Aprilia ride, Biaggi wastes no time showing he's ready for 2010.

Historically a slow starter, Max Biaggi backed up his credentials as a genuine WSB title contender with a strong opening day of testing. The factory Aprilia man finished the day second fastest, but revealed he hasn’t even been looking at the lap times.

“Compared to the race here earlier in the year the bike is much better and the times are coming much easier. We are working on a few things but right now I don’t feel on the limit. I have the new Ohlins forks for this test so we have to understand how they work and the sensation they give.

“Apart from that it is only small things we have to test so two days here is enough for us.”

Crashtastic

James Toseland gets up to speed on the Yamaha R1 the British pilot having been demoted to SBK from the MotoGP Tech 3 Yamaha team.
Toseland appears to be at home on his Yamaha posting the third fastest time on day one despite taking a small spill exiting the second right hand corner.
Despite it only being an unofficial winter test there were three crashes of note on the opening day. World Supersport front runner Kenan Sofuoglu needed just half a lap before he suffered a huge high side exiting the second right hand corner of the lap. The Turkish rider landed heavily and sustained a badly cut middle finger, which required three stitches at Valencia hospital.

Former Tech3 MotoGP man and new Yamaha Superbike signing James Toseland, crashed his R1 when he lost the front exiting the same corner, but escaped unhurt.

Jonathan Rea suffered the smallest crash of the day when he lost the front at slow speed at turn two after running wide. He was able to remount and ride back to the pits.

Moto2 benefit from track time

It wasn’t just WSB and WSS riders on track in Valencia, four Moto2 teams made the trip to Valencia to get some much needed testing – Tech3, Aspar, Pons Racing and Sutter Racing.

I agree with the weight issue, but did anyone notice that by the end of the season he had the slowest bike on the grid!! Also this guy has proved from 2000 that he starts slowley then by year 3 he is in the hunt for the championship. He became worlds youngest champion at 23!!! He will have them all licked in 2010 and it will be a british top 5 in the championship!! Top guy people need to get off his back and sppreciate he wiped the floor with Bayliss at Brands claiming the double in 07 and at Donnington where he was robbed in teh second race with faulty bike.

Toseland just didn't have it in GP. Why the need for excuses? Even he said he's sorry he didn't do better, but like a good racer that he is, he's already looking to next season. On his own team was a 2 times WSBK world champion, which I doubt weight less, on the same bike and so on, who finished 5th in the championship...Toseland ain't the first one, and probably not the last one to have difficulties with the move from Superbikes (Bayliss anyone?). Blaming his weight for it just takes away from his talent and credit. Gonna be a hell of a year!

yes, i do..he is a two time series winner..
rossi and Hayden use to be big, bur are now about 140 lbs or less..
u don't have as good a chance if your 160 pounds..
Hutch -James & Moto2  December 10, 2009 10:42 AM
James, like Nicky & Colin were big compared to the pint-sized dudes they're battling with. But then Rossi is not a little dude either so there's more to it than simply body size. Toseland is an excllent Superbike rider - he obviously is not a good GP rider though. He'll be good but do youthink he will have Haga, Biaggi and Fabrizio covered in his first year back? He's no Spies...

There were no Moto2 times provided, sorry guys..
toseland -too big?  December 10, 2009 10:09 AM
