Biaggi Tops World Superbike Valencia Test

Thursday, December 10, 2009
Max Biaggi is figuring out the all-new 2009 Aprilia RSV4 at Valencia.
Biaggi tried a new Ohlins fork in Valencia and the result was the top time of the test. Must have been an improvement...
The second day of the World Superbike team test at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia, Spain, concluded with Italian Max Biaggi dropping almost two seconds from Day 1 to top the time sheets.

While the Roman Emperor was second-quickest yesterday, he shaved off another 1.7 seconds today to post a 1:33.8 on his factory Aprilia RSV4 and leave the test quickest. Biaggi said yesterday that the team's main focus was to develop the new Ohlins fork.

He was followed by Brit Leon Haslam, who was fastest on Day 1. The son of former 500cc GP ace Ron Haslam was just two-tenths back on his Alstare Suzuki at 1:34.0, some 1.5 seconds quicker than he went yesterday. And while all the top riders were on par with the race pace from this year, none would match the 1:33.2 Ben Spies did to set pole position for the event back in April.

Sterilgarda Yamaha's Cal Crutchlow bested his two-time WSBK champion teammate James Toseland to take the  third spot at a 1:34.1. Toseland was third yesterday but fell back to fifth today with a 1:34.3.

Haslam, now on a Suzuki, ended the test second fastest.
In a Yamaha team release, Crutchlow said: "Today was even better than the first day, we worked through a lot more settings in the sessions. I'm disappointed with my final time though as I think I could have been fastest at the end of the day, but I didn't get a chance to use the fastest tire. I'm happy enough with my overall pace and consistency. We've still more to do so I'm looking forward to getting back on the bike in January and keeping up the development."

Ten Kate Hannspree Honda's Jonathan Rea was in the middle of the two Yamahas with his 1:34.2, while his Ten Kate teammate Max Neukirchner ended sixth with a 1:34.7.

Alstare Suzuki’s Sylvan Guintoli was seventh-quickest and though he didn’t excel at setting a single lap time, the French rider did show impressive consistency even on worn tires at the end of the test. Reigning British Superbike Champion Leon Camier survived two falls in the afternoon, but still managed to improve his lap times on the factory Aprilia RSV4. He ended the test eighth-fastest.
