Roger Edmondson to Leave AMA Racing

Wednesday, December 30, 2009
AMA Czar Roger Edmonson
The 2010 AMA Pro Road Racing season will not have CEO Roger Edmondson at the helm.
A recent press release from AMA Pro Racing has announced CEO Roger Edmondson will leave the organization due to “unforeseen health issues.” AMA Pro Racing execs David Atlas, Tom Bledsoe and Chris Harris will fill in, with Edmondson “available to consult.” Edmondson has been at the center of controversy as the leading figurehead of the Daytona Motorsport Group’s takeover of the AMA racing efforts, most notably in the AMA Superbike roadracing series. - MCUSA Ed

Roger Edmondson will be leaving his position as Chairman, Managing Member and Chief Executive Officer of AMA Pro Racing effective January 1, 2010.

Edmondson, a pioneer in motorcycle racing and one of the original Managing Members of the AMA Pro Racing organization, will be leaving to deal with some unforeseen health issues that necessitate his full attention.

"Roger's health is first and foremost in our minds," said David Atlas, Chief Operating Officer, AMA Pro Racing. "Roger's significant, multi-decade contribution to motorcycle racing is well known but nothing is more important than his health."

With Edmondson not calling the shots in 2010, will unpopular rules like the pace car and rolling starts be on the way out at AMA Superbike, excuse us, AMA Pro Road Racing events?
Edmondson will available to consult with the management of AMA Pro Racing but his official duties will be reallocated among the other current Managing Members, David Atlas, Tom Bledsoe and Chris Harris.

The 2010 AMA Pro Racing season will again open at the famous Daytona International Speedway, March 3-5, headlined by the Daytona 200 held under the lights at the 2.5-mile World Center of Racing followed by a full season of Road Racing, Flat Track and Motocross events.

Superbike-premiere class
600's-second tier
its going to take years to return to where we were, and move on from there......

Edmonson is exiting the limelight because he knows the AMA/DMG series are going to go under and tank. By distancing himself with a “medical excuse”, he can remain close if for some reason it pulls out of its death spiral. If it doesn’t, he can walk away to another job and claim it didn’t happen under his watch. Thus saving himself in a no blame situation. Executives do this all of the time. The series is not going to get better, expect the worse, DMG still has a hand in it and Edmonson is consulting. So what has really changed? P.R. Ploy, just like adding four pounds to the Buell and calling it a weight disadvantage to race 600 cc inlines…

I wish Roger well.

I hope DMG has paid some attention to their customers over the past year and now move aggressively to reinstate what the fans (you remember - the people who pay the bills) want.
1) premier racing - eg WSB rules, 1000cc premier class, 600 as second tier, other classes fine - makes for a good weekend
2) good TV coverage - same day/same weekend
3) reinstatement of purses & grooming of globally competitive talent

I want AMA Pro Racing to once again be the envy of the other global series, and I don't want to have to wait forever or go thru another soap opera of ego driven tangents - just good racing, good tracks & a return to growth

Daniel -What about Grand Am  December 30, 2009 06:17 PM
Doesn't mention the fact he is president of that series. It's not mentioned anywhere that he didn't leave that job.

There's hope yet, if only for 2011.

ama/dmg has to change there image with the fan base and the quickest way is to get rd out of the public eye and to keep his fat mouth shut! They should have done this in oct and the series would be alot further along than wat it is now. He needs to stay gone and let ama/dmg right his wrongs!! He needs to add some more gold to his mr T starter kit!!! Hehe ha ha
Alan -Roger E  December 30, 2009 01:25 PM
Thank God!
Juniper -DMG  December 30, 2009 12:45 PM
Let’s hope the people taking over his responsibilities don’t have the same retarded “vision” that he has otherwise things will only become worse. Unfortunately people like Rodger Edmondson usually surround themselves with people that think like they do so the new people might be another DMG disappointment.
bikerrandy -Edmonson out !  December 30, 2009 12:25 PM
Better late than never. Let's hope the series get's back the way it once was.
