2010 Daytona 200 Qualifying Results

Thursday, March 04, 2010
Under the lights of Daytona International Speedway Danny Eslick clicked off the fastest time in Daytona SportBike final qualifying. During the night-time session the GEICO Powersports pilot managed a 1:50.085 fast-lap, putting him just .002 of a second ahead of Martin Cardenas. Cardenas put his GSX-R on the first row on his sixth lap around the illuminated circuit. Team Graves Yamaha grabbed the remaining two positions up front. Tommy Aquino and Josh Herrin turned times of 1:50.166 and 1:50.294 respectively.

Tommy Aquino posted the third quickest qualifying time for the 2010 Daytona 200.  He will start right next to his teammate Josh Herrin.

Said Eslick after securing pole position (via DIS press release): “I thought I had it in my hands (last year) and that one slipped away. To get it this year, means a lot. It hasn’t sunk in yet, I don’t think. Maybe tomorrow when I see that Rolex it will be a little different. It’s great. It’s good momentum to get the season started off on the right foot.”

Former Daytona 200 winner Steve Rapp, the only Ducati in Group A qualifying, paced the Team Latus Motors 848 to fifth-fastest. Melissa Paris will look to improve on her 21st-place finish in 2009 (the best finish in the 200 by a female rider) from 28th on the grid.

The Daytona 200 will start under the Friday night lights at 8 p.m. EST.

OMGosh... I had no idea! Y'all are crazy! Keep safe out there!
Brian -RE: Speed  March 5, 2010 08:15 PM
Laura, it depends on a couple of factors including how they're geared, but I usually top out at about 165-170mph when racing this particular track. Keep in mind that on most tracks, it's very difficult to actually reach top speed because of the short straights. For a variety of reasons, including keeping the RPM up high in the power band and minimizing excursions into low gears (where gear ratios are taller between gears), we usually use larger rear sprockets and smaller front sprockets on other tracks. This increases race performance, but decreases top speed. I don't know how the AMA folks run their gearing at Dayonta---I race CCS.

As for running 600cc versus liter bikes at Daytona---I understand where you're coming from there, but it's never about the speed anyway. I've had just as much fun racing 250cc bikes as I have any others. A good example is Jordan Szoke's recent track record set at Jennings GP. His 1000cc time was only a half second better than his 600cc time an hour later. It's the skill of the rider, not the power of the bike.

How fast do these bikes go at top speed?

Running 600s as the feature event just doesn't have the excitement of the higher powered machines. Many of the cars and personal bikes of the spectators are faster than these machines. I wish they'd go back to the more powerful machines as the feature race. A big track like Daytona deserves big power and higher speeds for the main event. These guys are great, but shouldn't be the main attraction.

I'm so glad Danny Eslick is proving all the Buell-haters wrong. He has the speed, and last season's championship was won by his ability to ride the bike, not by an advantage the Buell had over the rest of the field!
