2010 American SuperBike Mid-Ohio Race 2

Sunday, July 18, 2010
Josh Hayes #4 made it past Tommy Hayden #22 on Lap 10 but it was short-lived as Hayden quickly regained his lead.
Tommy Hayden (#22) held off Josh Hayes (#4) to take the victory in Race 2 at Mid-Ohio.
Taking the win in Race 2 of the American SuperBike series at Mid-Ohio was Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden, who took the lead halfway into the race and defended it from rival Josh Hayes. Rounding out the podium was Ducati’s Larry Pegram.

Pegram was in the lead during the opening lap when Hayden and Hayes began their push toward the front. At the end of the first lap Pat Clark Motorsports Yamaha rider Chris Clark suffered a mechanical issue and was forced to retire early from the race.

Just two laps in Hayden took over the front with Pegram and Hayes trailing. Shortly afterward Hayes made his way ahead of Pegram for second and was running just over two-tenths away from the leader.

As Hayes chased Hayden up front, Canadian Superbike champ Jordan Szoke advanced to ninth over Suzuki’s Taylor Knapp. Shortly afterward Szoke crashed out, making it a disappointing ASB debut at Mid-Ohio for the Honda rider. Up front Hayes was staying right with Hayden and not showing any signs of backing off. Less than one second separated the top-four riders as they fought each other for position halfway into the competition. Hayes finally broke past Hayden on Lap 10, but the #22 bike didn’t give up easily and returned a pass on Hayes.

With Pegram and Pat Clark Motorsports’ Ben Bostrom running third and fourth respectively, Hayden began slowly inching ahead of Hayes on Lap 15. But Hayes kept things close, the two separated by just two-tenths of a second.

Hayes stayed right with Hayden until the end, never letting up on him until Hayden eventually crossed the finish line with 0.194 seconds to spare. Hayes took a close second with Pegram taking a podium finish in third. Ben Bostrom and Jordan Suzuki’s Brett McCormick rounded out the top-five finishers. Eric Bostrom finished 13th.
