2010 American SuperBike New Jersey Race 1

Saturday, September 4, 2010
Despite closing a large gap on the leader Tommy Hayden #22 took second in a shortened 21-lap contest.
Yamaha's Josh Hayes took the win by 0.105 seconds ahead of Tommy Hayden in the first SuperBike race.
In what was a shortened 21-lap contest, Team Graves Yamaha’s Josh Hayes took the American SuperBike win ahead of Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden at New Jersey. Hayden secured an excellent start from pole position, but his lead was quickly erased by Hayes on the second lap. Following behind Hayden was Pat Clark Motorsports’ Ben Bostrom, Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Blake Young and M4 Monster Energy Suzuki’s John Hopkins.

On Lap 3 Zemke successfully made it around Hayden for second while Hopkins advanced into fifth. Bostrom kicked it into high gear as the race neared the halfway point, and moved into second ahead of Zemke. Bostrom’s second-place was short-lived, however, as Hayden cut through the top-three and came out less than half a second behind Hayes. By Lap 15 the order was: Hayes, Hayden, Bostrom, Hopkins, Zemke and Young. In the final laps Hayes began extending his lead over the field, but Hayden remained determined and increased his pace to stay with the Yamaha rider. On the final lap Hayden had cut Hayes’ lead down to 0.720 seconds, and Hayden was quickly gaining on the leader. Heading into Turn 1 Hayden made a decisive pass on Hayes for the lead, and it appeared that Hayden was going to steal the victory away. The event was cut short, however, due to a major crash at Turn 13 which involved Brett McCormick. The race was red flagged, and due to regulation the scoring of the race reverted back to the leader of the last completed lap - which was Hayes. As a result Hayes took the victory by 0.105 seconds ahead of Hayden. Bostrom took third, followed by Young more than 10 seconds behind in fourth. Hopkins rounded out the top-five finishers in fifth aboard his Suzuki GSX-R1000.
