Tommy Hayden clenched the win in Race 1 by only 0.52 seconds ahead of Josh Hayes.
For much the same as it has been throughout the entire 2010 season, Graves Yamaha’s Josh Hayes and Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden were involved in a tight battle for the race win at Barber Motorsports Park. The contest was decided when Hayden made a single pass on Hayes, the championship leader coming into the weekend, on Lap 17 of the 21-lap feud, allowing the Suzuki rider to clench the Race 1 victory by a scant 0.052 seconds.

Hayes kicked things off in the American SuperBike class by jumping out to the lead in the opening laps with Hayden’s teammate, Blake Young, and Hayden himself closely behind. Young was kicked out of the top-three when M4 Monster Energy Suzuki’s John Hopkins grabbed third as Hayden moved into second behind Hayes. Also near the front were National Guard Jordan Suzuki’s Jake Zemke and Jordan Suzuki rider Brett McCormick, who were running fifth and sixth, respectively.

Hayden was patient and consistent in how he approached the late-race pass on Hayes. The Kentucky rider spent more than half the race getting within striking distance and setting up the move, and by Lap 15 Hayden was only 0.146-seconds behind the leader. Meanwhile, Zemke had an unfortunate accident on Lap 16, falling while running in fifth spot. Also going down earlier in the bout was Ducati’s Larry Pegram.

With four laps remaining, the top-five riders became increasingly spread out, except for the two frontrunners. On Lap 17, Hayden then committed to making the pass he had been setting up for over half the race, managing to successful overtake the Yamaha rider for the lead. He would then go unchallenged, Hayden taking his fifth win of the season over championship rival Hayes.

Crossing the finish more than 10 seconds behind the lead pair was Hopkins, who maintained his pace throughout the contest to finish third. Young and RiderDiscount.com’s Taylor Knapp rounded out the top-five in fourth and fifth, respectively, with Young finishing more than four seconds adrift of Hopkins.
