2010 MotoGP Assen Practice

Jorge Lorenzo with his rival teammate out the Mallorcan rules the GP paddock - 2010 Assen TT
Hot on the heels of his victory at Silverstone last weekend, Fiat Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo topped the time sheets during Thursday's Free Practice, kicking off the 80th running of the historic race.
Fiat Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo posted the fastest times in Thursday’s Free Practice session for the upcoming 80th running of the Assen TT. The current MotoGP championship points leader has been strong at the Dutch course, finishing runner-up to Rossi in 2009 and now with The Doctor out of the picture he has to be the favorite for Saturday’s final.

"I am happy with today and I feel very good on the bike; the weather is perfect and I love Assen,” explained Lorenzo. “The new corner is very fast and I really like it, it's great fun to ride through the chicane at such a speed. We could probably have a bit more traction but we have two more sessions to work on this and then we will try to get the best possible grid position again. The team is working so well and the ambience and atmosphere in our garage is amazing at the moment."

Behind the Yamaha pilot on the timing sheets is the Ducati Marlboro duo of Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden. Stoner, who is still struggling to find his form this year, was a mere .011 off the pace of Lorenzo, proving the new TT layout seems to work fine for him in the early going. His teammate, Hayden is the fastest American rider once again, although he is off the pace by a half second. Hayden has been shaky at Assen the past couple years, but he did make a podium appearance back in 2007.
Casey Stoner struggles to get his Bridgestones up to temperature with the Australian and 2007 champion unable to find his once dominating form.
Ducati's Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden found the pace in opening practice taking the second and third spots behind Lorenzo.

Monster Tech 3 Yamaha’s Colin Edwards was fourth fastest in practice but that should not be a surprise as the Texas Tornado always seems to do well in Holland. The Repsol Honda pairing of Dovizioso and Pedrosa were struggling to match the pace of Lorenzo, finishing with best laps that were .750 seconds of his time.
