Newly-crowned 2010 MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo enjoyed a homecoming fit for heroes when he landed in his native Mallorca yesterday, with thousands of people turning out to greet the victorious Fiat Yamaha rider as he touched down on home shores.

He was met by crowds and dignitaries at the airport before enjoying a parade through the capital city of Palma de Mallorca, ending at the Illes Balears Presidential Palace. He then presented one of his special 'Astronaut' helmets to President Francesc Antich, before joining his family on the palace balcony to wave to the thousands of people below, who joined together in a rendition of 'We Are The Champions'.

The 23-year-old will now enjoy some time at home with his friends and family before the penultimate round of the championship at Estoril in Portugal in ten day's time.

That's the same Hero's welcome given to Rafa Nadal when he won Wimbledon, the Olympics and the US Open. MotoGP is Huge in Spain, probably second only to Italy, and it shows with all the talent that comes out of there. Congrats, JL!
Shaitan -Give the man his due  October 25, 2010 09:37 AM
C'mon guys, Jorge was awesome this season. If Pedrosa hadn't gotten injured, nor Rossi, it might have been different, but they DID, so give Jorge his due. Great rider and great season. Good to see Hayden finding himself again the last few races and Spies looks poised as a major competitor next season (plus he'll know all the tracks).
kevin -case in point  October 22, 2010 11:50 AM
Hayden was able to take Lorenzo on a last lap pass when the M1 was struggling and make it stick. Hayden could not make it stick in Phillip Island on Rossi. There's your difference.
kevin -Rossi is a killer  October 22, 2010 11:46 AM
Head to head (or wheel to wheel) it is VERY rare to see Rossi not come out in front. When Jorge, Casey, Dani, etc have won races, in most of them, they were run away wins. Only a couple have I seen where Rossi was within a half second back or so where he didn't come out on top. I'm not taking anything away from these guys. They are every bit as FAST (and even faster, Rossi and Hayden both said this about Stoner one time) than Rossi. But only by 100ths of a second and not always. But when qualifying is over and it's time to race things change. Qualifying isn't racing and that is where Rossi wipes the floor with other riders. Even when he launches one of his sucky starts! haha

I'm a Rossi fan, but lorenzo wiped the floor with rossi this season..
Top-Dog -DCCL, so Lame!  October 21, 2010 05:54 PM
Lorenzo may have been on his game this year but he would NOT have beaten Rossi wheel-to-wheel! Jorge has talent and he took advantage of Rossi's misfortune and the other rider's mishaps as GR said previously! How many races, weeks, months did it take for Dani/Stoner to sort through their issues?! Stoner/Spies are 2 riders with enough grit to beat Rossi at his own game on the track! Jorge even admitted openly that he needs to be more like Rossi in race-craft since he doesn't have the swag like Rossi off the track! Don't be so lame DCCL... go cry on Jorge's lap now.
DCCL -JL was fortunate rossi was injured??  October 21, 2010 03:25 PM
Yes, rossi himself had nothing to do with that injury, the bike totally did it all on its own. rossi is the 1 that choked @ his home circuit, pushing his tire too hard too soon in practice no less. Let's dispense with the JL only won because rossi wasn't there. That's like saying rossi only won the title last year because JL injured himself. So rossi was fortunate that JL was injured and other riders fell short in various areas!...
HokieNinja -One Hell Of A Celebration  October 21, 2010 12:35 PM
I don't care all that much for Lorenzo, but at least Spain recognized his accomplishment. That scale of celebration would never happen in the USA. Did Nicky ever meet Bush after he won his world championship (seriously, I'm asking, I don't know)? It's a shame motorsports doesn't have the recognition in the USA that it has in the rest of the world (outside of NASCAR).
GhostRider -Jorge?  October 21, 2010 12:16 PM
Well, can't say that he didn't earn the Title based on the points tally... he was fortunate that Rossi was injured and the other riders fell short in various areas! Enjoy your moment Jorge... defending the title next season won't be so easy, as this one! Rossi/Spies will be ready to take it away from you!
