2010 Thunder Valley AMA Motocross Insider

We're just beginning to catch our breath after huffing and puffing our way through the thin air around Thunder Valley Motocross Park to get all the action. The 6100-foot elevation of Round 5 of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship put a strain on racers and bikes, but the racing was no less intense. Let’s take a look back at some of the top stories from the weekend.

Josh Grant dominated the first moto  but went down in the first turn of the second moto.

In Friday’s preview we told you to watch out for Josh Grant, as he won this race last year. During the first moto he didn’t disappoint. Sporting new 2011 Shift Racing gear, the JGR racer chased down series leader Ryan Dungey and went on to win by almost seven seconds. Then in Moto 2 it all fell apart. On the start Grant got tangled with Ryan Sipes and remounted in dead last. In the next 30 minutes, #33 charged through the pack and ended up in 10th overall. His 1-10 moto score was good enough for fourth overall, so it wasn’t a total loss for the Yamaha rider, but it would have been nice to see if he could run with Dungey in the second moto. I say before the season is over you will see Grant holding a first place trophy.

Where was Chad Reed this weekend? He seemed to fade in to the pack as he struggled to find his flow and run the pace at altitude. In the first moto he got off the line in 22nd and worked his way up to 10th. Although he made up some serious ground from the poor start, he never looked like he was aggressive. The second moto went better with TwoTwo starting off in 10th. He would gain three positions to finish seventh, placing him ninth for the day. Reed dropped to third in championship points.

GEICO Powersports Honda’s Brett Metcalfe has be consistently running at the front all year, and his standing in the points reflects that fact. With his first podium overall finish of the year, the Aussie has moved into second place in title chase. Big-bike rookies now hold down the top two positions in the championship race. Metcalfe finished in fourth place in both motos, which was good enough to edge Grant out for third overall.

Rockstar Suzukis Tommy Hahn finished third in the first moto  but twisted his foot badly in the second moto. Hahn was credited with 35th in the second moto after limping off the track.

What was looking like a great day for Tommy Hahn ended up in disaster. In the first moto Hahn battle his way up from outside the top-10 to finish on the box in third place. In the second moto, the Suzuki pilot was running as high as fifth when he injured his foot. Hahn twisted his foot under his footpeg on a landing of a jump, and had to pull out of the moto. According to his twitter, the foot is broken, but no additional details are available at this time. Hopefully the break is minor, and he can return to action sooner than later.

In the 250 class, Honda’s Trey Canard finally made it back up on to the podium at the end of the day, finishing second. Moto 1 saw Ice Trey running in third place the entire 35 minutes, chasing after Christophe Pourcel and Dean Wilson. The second moto it was the other way around with Pourcel and Wilson chasing after the #38 Honda. Pourcel eventually caught and passed Canard on the 10th lap. He would finish out the moto in second.

“I’m not going to sugarcoat it. I struggled when I got back on the Lites (250) bike,” said Canard about his performance after returning to the small-bore Honda. “I guess what matters now is that I am getting to where I feel like I’m riding pretty well.”

Pro Circuit Kawasakis Jake Weimer cant catch a break lately. Weimer was caught up in a first turn pile-up in moto one and then went down in moto two.
Jake Weimer is fast but seems to always be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Once again he hit the dirt at Thunder Valley.
Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer continues to struggle while his three other teammates finish at the top of every race. Weimer looked solid during practice, but went down in both motos, ruining his chances of a decent overall finish. The first moto saw Weimer going down with Barcia in the second turn. The Kawasaki racer was almost in last place when he remounted. His charge up to 10th was impressive and shows that he was the speed to run up front if he can catch a break. His day went from bad to worse in the second moto, when Vince Friese knocked him down after making a pass for sixth. Weimer ended up 24th in the moto and 17th for the day. Maybe the next round at Red Bud will be the track Weimer can turn things around.

A massive crowd of thousands filled the hillside and despite threatening weather, were able to witness a tremendous battle amongst the world's fastest riders at mile high elevation. Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey captured his fourth consecutive 450 Class victory and has become the rider to beat in 2010 while Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Christophe Pourcel became the first repeat winner in the 250 Class. Additionally, the Women's Motocross Championship resumed with its third round as DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha's Jessica Patterson remained perfect in 2010 with her third overall win.
The video is narrated by NBC and SPEED television host Jason Weigandt and includes racing highlights from the 450, 250 and WMX classes.

How about the almost complete absence of references to Christophe Pourcel's dominant wins in both motos? You'd hardly know he was in it from the above write-up. As for the Dungey haters - they may change their views if Dungey has to compete against the top riders next year. Stewart and Reed were injured early, and when Reed came back he was out of sorts. RV looked like he was going to win the SX title until he too got hurt. I have no doubt that RV would have had the better of Dungey in the outdoors. Last year Dungey was lucky to beat Pourcel outdoors on the 250. I suppose by "clean cut" you mean someone without much of a mind of their own. He should be thanking the Suzuki development engineers, not "the man above". Listen to the stuff he comes out with - it's like his mouth is moving but his brain is turned off. I can certainly understand why JLaw didn't get on with him.

whats up with the haters on Dungey he is awsome, he is so blah whatever he doing what others cant do or havent done in their rookie seasons lets face the boy can ride a dirtbike

Tired of Dungey? What, you're tired of the most talented rider in the 450 class right now? He has a great clean-cut persona, friendly and let's face it, fast as hell! If you're so tired of him why don't you go jump in a national and bump him off the top spot
