SuperTrapp IDSX Exhaust
Opening the exhaust system on the RZR boosts performance. We installed a SuperTrapp IDSX system for its tunability.
There are two things that are considered to be the Holy Grail for increasing the performance of an internal combustion engine — increase the flow of air and fuel into the engine and the flow of the used mixture out. Increasing the airflow in can be accomplished with a better air filter as well as increasing the fuel through the carburetor or fuel injectors. Increasing the flow out of the engine is done by using an exhaust system that is less restrictive.

An upside to a modified exhaust system that allows the exhaust to flow more freely is that the engine will run cooler. The downside is that it's louder. That means you will be a less friendly neighbor. Run a loud exhaust and you might as well nail flyers to all the utility poles saying you’re here to irritate everyone and close down the riding areas.

But alas, in an effort to build a tuneable exhaust system, SuperTrapp found that you can actually make a better flowing exhaust without adding an unwanted amount of additional noise. To test the theory we bolted one of SuperTrapp’s new IDSX exhaust systems on our long-term Polaris RZR.

The IDSX system consists of a new stainless-steel head pipe, muffler canister and inner core that attaches to the existing exhaust manifold right after the 2-into-1 collector. Although it’s easiest to remove the bed for the installation, the overall exhaust bolt-on is a quick and easy process of removing the old muffler and pipe, bolting on the new muffler bracket, and attaching the SuperTrapp muffler and pipe with the supplied hardware.

The difference between SuperTrapp and other exhaust manufacturers is the ability to tune the sound and performance by swapping the number of stainless-steel discs in the muffler.

The unique (and best) part of the IDSX system is the ability to tune it for your specific riding conditions. This is accomplished by changing the number of stainless steel discs concealed behind the end-cap. Use as few as eight discs for a quieter sound and more torque, or up to 12 discs for more power and more sound. Yes, you read that right; this system gives you the ability to tune in more low-end grunt or more top-end speed. No matter how many discs you use (or don’t use), the IDSX has a Forest Service-approved spark arrestor inside the unit.

The SuperTrapp disc system, originally invented in 1971, is unique in two ways – first, and most obvious is the tuneable nature that allows you to have more power for places like the sand dunes, and more torque and quieter running for the trails. Not as noticeable, but just as important to the increase in performance, is the design of the discs themselves, being slightly smaller on the inside than the outside, thereby creating an expansion chamber effect and more scavenging of the exhaust gases.

Installation is straightforward, but taking off the RZR bed makes the job easiest by allowing better access.
To get the best results from the exhaust I suggest you combine the IDSX with an intake system like the K&N for the most gain in performance with the least increase in noise. For even more performance without any increase in sound levels I’d suggest adding an EFI programmer like the one from DMC.

I’ve used SuperTrapp exhaust systems for years. The stainless steel construction keeps them from rusting out, and the tuneable discs provide the option to have both better performance and quieter operation.
