Fantasy Motocross Southwick Hot Picks

Friday, August 27, 2010
The 2010 AMA Pro Motocross series trudges onward toward Southwick this weekend, and with it marks the final three rounds of the 2010 series. Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey has the championship firmly in his grasp, and all that

remains for him to clench the title is pull off one last victory in Round 11 of the championship. The Motocross season is almost to an end, so get ready to make your last few Fantasy Motocross picks in the coming weeks.

450 Class
A-Riders
Sure Thing

Ryan Dungey – Currently leading the championship by 111 points, Dungey has had a stellar season. If he wins the next round at Southwick it will put him out of reach of both Andrew Short and Brett Metcalfe. The upcoming round also carries significant weight because, if Dungey takes the overall, he’ll become the first rookie in history to pull off a Supercross and 450 National title in the same year. Definitely look for Dungey to wrap up the 2010 season for good in the next round at Southwick.

Andrew Short – While Dungey may be out of reach for Andrew Short, the Honda rider still has to worry about Brett Metcalfe, who lurks just 14 points behind him in third-place. With just three rounds remaining every minute of the final six motos are going to count big, and Short will have to put in strong performances in the coming weeks. But it shouldn’t be a problem for someone like Short, who’s proved himself quite adept at getting holeshots and earning finishes inside the top-five all season long.

James Stewart plans on returning to AMA Motocross competition at Unadilla in upstate New York later this month.
After the Unadilla round didn't go as expected, James Stewart has pulled out of the remaining motocross rounds to concentrate on the upcoming Supercross season.
Maybe

Josh Grant -Thirty-three points behind Metcalfe in the 450 championship is Josh Grant. Like Short, Grant’s main focus shouldn’t be catching up to the guy in front, but keeping track of who’s behind. Only 11 points separate Grant from Ben Townley, who’s been bringing the heat in the last few rounds. In order for Grant to walk away with fourth-place he’s going to have to step up his game. Grant took ninth overall at Unadilla, and prior to that he took 12th at Washougal. While not his best showings, they are part of a season that’s included numerous top-five finishes and regular postings inside the top-10.

Scratch

James Stewart - As was noted earlier on MotoUSA, James Stewart has officially backed out of the remaining 2010 season of motocross. After a difficult return at Unadilla, Stewart had decided that his time and energy would be better spent preparing for the 2011 season of Supercross.

B-Riders
Sure Thing
Brett Metcalfe - Honda’s Brett Metcalfe is currently third in the championship and appears only to be going up in the series. In the last round at Unadilla, Metcalfe took third overall behind Dungey and Clement Desalle. In the round before that, he had yet another third-place result behind Dungey and Short. Metcalfe is the first name that comes to mind when thinking of

consistency, and indeed the Geico Powersports rider has been the poster child for it by finishing inside the top-five nearly every round so far. Just 14 points away from second-place, Metcalfe stands a chance at making it into the top-two before the season ends.

Maybe

Ben Townley - Another rider who did fairly well in the last round at Unadilla was Ben Townely. The Honda Red Bull rider has had his ups and downs this season, but across the board Townley has rode quite strong. In fifth-place overall and trailing Grant by 11 points, Townley has to ride both offensively and defensively for the remainder of the season if he wants to maintain his position. Either way, Townely needs to continue riding error-free if he wants to walk away from this competition without getting burned Blake Wharton.

Kyle Regal - At Unadilla Kyle Regal rode a smart and impressive race to finish fifth overall. Two rounds prior to that, Regal posted another great finish at Spring Creek for third overall. As the championship rounds have begun to dwindle, Regal is one rider who’s stepped up his pace and intensity in observable ways. Like many others, however, Regal is caught in a precarious situation of having to push for more points while defending his current position in the championship. Regal remains only two points ahead of Kyle Chisholm in the series, and just 4 points from Ryan Sipes. The American Honda rider must put in his best runs in the last three rounds if he wants to take a top-10 finish.

250 Class
Hondas Trey Canard went 1-2 for the overall win at Unadilla. With Pourcels DNF in Moto 1 the points race just tightened up.
Honda's Trey Canard has been dominating the 250 class in the last four rounds and is just 16 points behind Pourcel.

A-Riders
Sure Thing
Christophe Pourcel – Frenchman Christophe Pourcel suffered a difficult round at Unadilla, but still leads the 250 series by 16 points. It doesn’t seem like much though when you consider the fact that Trey Canard has been pummeling the Kawasaki rider in the last four rounds, and making up significant points in the process. While the outcome of the 250 championship remains a guess, one thing is for certain: Pourcel and Canard will be running cut-throat races in the final rounds in order to claim the ultimate victory.

Trey Canard - Geico Powersports Honda’s Canard has pulled off a miraculous second half of the season with a total of four-straight wins in the last four rounds. One key detail that may become important, however, is that Canard has yet to race at the Southwick circuit. After missing the Southwick round in 2008 and again in 2009 due to injuries, his performance at the track is unknown and may become a major factor in the winning or losing of the championship.

Maybe

Tyla Rattray - Tyla Rattray heads to Southwick fresh off a fourth-place overall finish at Unadilla. Currently fourth in the championship and trailing his Kawasaki teammate by nine points, Rattray is one of the many riders who will be in the thick of it trying to squeeze the last few points out of the remaining rounds. One thing which Rattray won’t have to worry about in the coming rounds though is Justin Barcia, who remains 72 points behind him in the series.

B-Riders
GEICOs Blake Wharton finished second in the first moto at Unadilla joining his teammates Trey Canard and Justin Barcia on the podium.
Geico Powersports Honda’s Blake Wharton is only five points away in the championship from Justin Barcia.

Sure Thing
Dean Wilson - Third in the championship and 20 points away from second-place is Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson. The #108 bike finished third in the last round at Unadilla, and before that he took fifth overall at Washougal. A constant threat to the podium all year long, Wilson must put in a dominating performance in Round 11 if he doesn’t want Pourcel and Canard running away with the championship.

Maybe
Blake Wharton – Geico Powersports Honda’s Blake Wharton put in phenomenal displays in the last two rounds at Unadilla and Washougal, taking fourth and fifth overall in each respective round to move within five points of Barcia in the series. The struggle is far from over, however, as his determined Honda teammate, Eli Tomac, stands just 10 points behind in seventh. Wharton will need both a good start and no mistakes if he’s going to make it into the top-five and hold his position from Tomac.
