Homegrown Chrome - Luis Martinez' M109R

Friday, April 09, 2010

Here we go again. Motorcycle USA kicked off ‘Homegrown Chrome’ last week featuring the custom motorcycles of you, the reader. We realize there’s a lot of hard-working people out there who may not be into the custom bike show scene but are still damn proud of their customized ride. So we’re
Luis Martinezs custom 2006 Suzuki M109R.
This week's Homegrown Chrome features a custom 2006 Suzuki M109R called 'Blade Warrior' that's owned by Luis Martinez out of Merchantville, New Jersey.
Luis Martinez has taken the beefy 2006 Suzuki M109R power cruiser and given it an even more industrial edge.
offering you 15 minutes of fame with a feature article about that bike you've worked so hard to pimp out here on Motorcycle USA. Every week we’ll select a motorcycle from one of our readers to feature here on the site. To get it kicked off, we spread a little love Jay Gillikin’s way for his customized Harley-Davidson Rocker C. This week, we’ve chosen Luis Martinez’s mechanized 2006 Suzuki M109R as the lucky recipient of a spread in our online moto magazine.

Luis has taken the beefy 2006 Suzuki M109R power cruiser and given it an even more industrial edge. He’s added extra gusto to an already formidable engine with Big Air intakes, an FI200 and HardChrome 2-1 Sideburners exhausts. Luis continued to mechanize his ride with some sweet drilled-out 2” Kewl Metal risers, Xoprodox grips and mirror mounts that feature a drilled-out design, too. Anything that could be chromed, has been chromed, with most of the work done by LiquidPain. The chrome job includes the wheels, driveshaft, swingarm, derby covers, front brake reservoir, clutch lever, rear brake mount, switch covers and side engine covers. What hasn’t been chromed has been draped in killer Bushido Blade-style paint courtesy of the guys at Cutting Edge Illusions. If Luis was aiming for an industrial-strength ride, we say “Mission Accomplished.”

Tell us a little about your bike Luis:
I wanted it originally to be some type of mechanical/ Terminator3 theme, but I ended up staying with the mechanical theme instead. I didn’t want it to become too crowded with graphics, so I wanted it to follow the theme that I already had going with the bike with all the holes in the chrome pieces that I was installing on the bike. And I had recently begun learning Wing Chun Kung Fu, and their main weapon of battling is swords. When I noticed the blades theme in Cutting Edge Illusions gallery, that’s what I wanted to incorporate in the theme along with a little twist. Had the holes added to the blades so it continued the pattern already started in the chrome parts added to the controls. If you notice around the risers, grips and so forth, there are plenty of holes in that chrome. All in all, I’m very satisfied the way everything turned out and have a new found love for my bike and am very proud of it. Especially it being my first-ever
Anything that could be chromed on this M109R is chromed most of it by LiquidPain.

motorcycle after taking a riding course approximately 2 1/2 yrs ago. After riding for the first time, I had wished I’d done it many years ago.

So who’s it going to be next week? The process is easy. Copy the info below and throw it into an email. Fill in as many of the questions and specs as you can. Tell us as much as possible about your bike and how it came together. Then send that info along with a handful of photos to mcusa_content2@hotmail.com   Maybe next week you’ll be the one with bragging rights for having your bike featured in a spread on Motorcycle USA.

I own an m109r, took me 5 months to find one for sale, had to buy used because the dealers didn't have em. I smoke the crap out or Hardleys on the track by .65 to 1.38 seconds each weekend I race. The Hardley guys keep trying to talk smack but end up paying out in the end. Yes the V-rod is fast, not realy a HD as it is German with Japanese parts, but ok HD "makes" one fast bike (Thanks Porsche). Why did Buel close? Oh thats right couldn't sell em since 06' and HD dropped several models because they wont sell....looks like the crap economy hit everyone not just Suzuki....git yer facts first Dumb ass

pete -M109R RIDER  April 20, 2010 08:42 AM
REALLY NICE JOB MATE!! LOOKS REALLY GOOD....To all you HD boys, i have had both and i can assure you i have enjoyed nothing more than selling my harley and buying my 109. it freakin hauls ass and is really comfy. stock 240 rear with stock 280 tire option when you get it replaced, ( a 3000 dollar minimum venture to do to a harley ) really good and responsive fuel injection, power like no harley has ever had, except vrod, but they still get owned by the 109. look at the mod list prices compared to anything harley, cheap in comparison with HD. the 109's reliability is 10 fold over the HD. doesnt leak oil like most harley's, better fun to ride than a HD,,,,,THE LIST JUST GOES ON!!! at the end of the day, what does it matter to you HD riders what you ride, as long as it looks awesome and goes like hell.......I REALLY HOPE TO SEE ALL YOU HARLEY DAVIDSON RIDERS AT A RED LIGHT, AFTER I CHOP YOU SENSELESS, I MIGHT OFFER TO HELP PUT YOUR BIKE ON A TRAILER SO YOU CAN TAKE IT HOME TO SPEND ANOTHER 6 MONTHS ON THE WORK BENCH!!
jason -Matt...  April 18, 2010 10:00 AM
Not so fast my friend...HD is sellin alot of bikes, in fact the dealership in upper sandusky Ohio sold close to 120 bike from last dec 09- current day...mine was one of those 120 bikes...:) And from talking to other HD dealerships in my area they're movin alot of bikes...EXCEPT sportsters..
Matt -Loppy  April 16, 2010 07:26 AM
Loppy you are right, the entire industry is still feeling the pinch from the current economic climate. Fewer people are buying bikes PERIOD including domestic & euro brands like Harley,Victory,Triumph etc witch is reflecting their retail and resale prices as well depending on the area you live.
Jason -LoopyLou...  April 15, 2010 05:09 AM
You said it all...amen!
LoopyLou -Metrics not selling  April 14, 2010 08:10 PM
The 2010 Vulcan Voyager (fake ElectraGlide) is down to $15k on ebay from $18k. This is current year stuff. (be $12K new by end of summer) The Stratoliner Deluxe, that was supposed to compete with the StreetGlide (cheesy fake batwing) was due out in Jan. Where it be, this is April. They still got so many unsold '08s Stratos in da warehouse they try to sell you an aftermarket batwing for one of those if you ask for an 2010 Deluxe.

Suzy 109s with lots of dust piling up, they wont even bring 2010s into the country at this point. So many dealers have folded and sent back all the bikes they had unsold.
All great motors, you could say superior to HD. Certainly more powerfull. Much less expensive. But they sure are butt ugly bikes!! VTXs, V1300 Stars, Royalstar Tour Deluxe. The list goes on!
milwaukee mike -Where's the 2010 M109?  April 14, 2010 09:20 AM
Suzuki has such a backlog of these that they did not bring any 2010 into this country.
Go to your Suzuki dealer (if you find one still open), and you will find new one and two year old M109s for next to nothing. Just think what a used one is worth?
Harvey Connection -Head light  April 14, 2010 09:17 AM
Luis, I think the bike lookes good except, what's up with that ugly thing around the heak light?
Jason -last time I checked  April 14, 2010 08:39 AM
which was a few months ago Harley owns upwards of 65-70% of the cruiser/touring market...hmmmmm...must be doin something right.
Dave -metrics  April 14, 2010 08:28 AM
Actually the metric cruiser sell pretty well. They do have American motorcycle styling which came from Indian, the first American motorcycle manufacturer. If you look at the history of American motorcycles you will find the davidson copied quite a bit of styling and other from Indian. So what you should say is either this has looks of an Indian or it has typical American styling.

I wouldn't waste my money on a davidson or the lifestyle for that matter. Give me any metric cruiser of the above mentioned any day.
Jason -To each their own...but  April 14, 2010 05:09 AM
Theres no way in hell I'd dump my hard earned money into a metric that wont be worth squat at the end of the day. You guys can slam Harley all you want but at least we have bikes that hold 90% of their value. :)
Loopy -Metric  April 13, 2010 07:09 PM
Heck, "Metric" Roadbike Magazine just dropped the metric from thier name and started featuring HD so folks would buy there crappy rag!!
Loopy Lou -Whatever  April 13, 2010 07:05 PM
Yuo can hoot and holler all you want, there is a good reason these bikes with "superior" motors (109, 1900 road/Stratoliner, Vulcan 2000) sell so poorly. And depreciate so quickly.

The reason is no one wants to buy them. Classicly styled cruisers out sell these Neo crap 10/1 all day long.

The only way to get a metric to sell well is to make it look like an HD.

The numbers do not lie, if you can find a Suzuki dealer still open anywhere near you house ask them how the 109 sells. Good luck with that.
Pres -That 9 is smackin. What a beast!!  April 13, 2010 03:56 PM
All cruisers have their good and bad qualities. Owned a slow "a" victory hammer and paid 22 + 10 for enhancements. Everybody knows it is better than the HD all around. Sold my Hammer and got a 9. Best product for the buck overall. Not shakin apart going down the road.
RJ -Nicely done!  April 13, 2010 02:36 PM
Here we go again, another metric cruiser that get's the orange and black panties in a bunch. You don't got to love it, just understand that opinions are like butt holes- everyone's got one... My own opinion on the matter is it doesn't need a bar and shield logo to get respect, just be on two wheels, put up some good numbers on the dyno, and a proven trend of dependability for other owners. I'm not so sure the M109 transmission fits into that model but the pictures sure look great...
biggerstretch -to conform or not to conform  April 13, 2010 07:49 AM
To each their own however after looking at all the bikes I could'nt find a Harley that fit me and I sure could'nt find one fast enough for me... I ended up with a 109R and chances are I will never buy a Harley ... too much money for what you get ... Victory perhaps , just not a Harley .... Too many people buy Harleys because they are Harleys and not because they are a good bike for them ... If you need to spend too much money for something just so you can say " look at me , I own a Harley " go for it .
Bigpapam109 -You Harely fools are idiots!!!!  April 13, 2010 07:08 AM
Why is it that a bone stock M109R can go to a bike show and beat out a tricked out Hardley? Why is it, you Harley guys pull up at a light, or go from a roll, and get your butts handed to you? Why is it, you spend $10k more for all that? You make your comments because you are only jealous that you dumped so much money into a bike that nobody notices. Oh, and why is it that Hardley had to drop Buell and your stocks fell out of the bottom? keep talking.
rick -ugly NO!  April 13, 2010 04:00 AM
man all you hd guys are paying for a name ! thats it. m109s are not ugly they look nice and they run! quit hatin all you hd guys your all just jealous and SO SLOW!!!
Mitch -Nice job  April 12, 2010 07:51 PM
Looks good, Luis. Don't pay any attention to the haters here. I'd be willing to bet that Andy, Jesse, Mike and Lou are too chicken to submit pictures of their bikes for this feature.
Loopy Lou -Oh yea, NOT  April 12, 2010 05:54 PM
Yea the 109 is such an awesome bike they had to stop importing it for 2010. They simply could not keep up with demand, so they dropped the line. The one Suzy dealer that has not folded in my metro area of 2 million people still has 2008s on the floor below cost.

Ride any bike you like, but do not put this bike in league with an HD.
109Owner -Harley Guys Calling Any Other Bike Ugly IS HYPOCRITICAL!!!  April 12, 2010 04:25 PM
Funny, EVERY time I am out on my 109 I have tons of compliments and questions. The Harley guys are just haters. They are haters because HDs are clunky, outdated ugly bikes (except the VROD)...

Get over it HD riders, your bikes will NEVER look this good. Now go away.
Mcguire -sewer rat  April 12, 2010 03:28 PM
I've been wondering when someone was going to do up a 109. The Header looks good I wonder what it runs like. Im suprized Suzuki didn't make this a 6 speed since its their premier cruiser. I think I like Fat on a cruiser. My RSTD is fat and it suits my 6'4" 230 lb frame pretty good.
lolareu -harley whhhaat  April 12, 2010 01:07 PM
negative comments probably coming from the boys who dress up in full harley davidson gear, LOL srsly what are you riding?! loling@u... its CUTE!
R -Wise money  April 12, 2010 12:41 PM
Yeah, you could have spent an extra 10 grand on a Harley and still not keep up with the nine. What a waste a money, the Hardly Davidson that is.
Nice work on the bike, ignore the Hardly riders.
Lee -M109r  April 12, 2010 12:09 PM
That is an awesome bike . Owning a m109r is great ! owning an m109 that has been modified and tricked out is WELL ... PRICELESS ! I hope our paths cross on day . I would love to see it in person ! Great work Jerry (liquidpain)!
Matt -Good Job  April 12, 2010 07:10 AM
I'm not usually a fan of the Ness style blade scheme on the classic style cruisers but it seems better suited on the sportier bodywork of the 109. Good Job.
Loopy lou -Vision looks good  April 11, 2010 06:51 PM
Impossible, they made the Victory look good! Well not good, just less ugly. Ok, they are both hideous!!
milwaukee mike -andy and Jesse  April 10, 2010 11:51 PM
Couldnd't agree more with you guys.
An absolute waste of time, effort, and money with no positive results.
Could have spent that kind of money on an HD and have something to be proud of.
Jesse -m109r ???  April 10, 2010 03:28 PM
M109r are the ugliest bikes out there
andy -juuuurghh  April 10, 2010 07:54 AM
...thats one freaking ugly cruiser!!
