AMA Pro Racing Miller Saturday 2011

Saturday, May 28, 2011
Josh Hayes in his Monster Energy Graves Yamaha livery turns laps during pre-season testing.
Josh Hayes led the American SuperBike field at Miller Motorsports Park - the Monster Energy Yamaha rider setting the pace in both the Practice and Qualifying 1 sessions.
Josh Hayes continued to lead the American SuperBike field at Miller Motorsports Park. The defending champ piloted his Yamaha R1 to provisional pole, leading both ASB sessions on the day. Hayes far outpaced his rivals in the morning session, but the Yoshimura Suzuki’s closed the gap in the afternoon, with Blake Young and Tommy Hayden placing a respective second and third on the timesheet. Rounding out the provisional front row and trailing his big brother was Jordan Suzuki’s Roger Hayden.

Hayes’ best of 1:50.4 has him lapping faster than some of the backmarkers in SBK, just a tenth behind former two-time champ James Toseland. The AMA’s fastest, however, would be 2.14 behind the SBK lead pace set by Carlos Checa.

Larry Pegram was fifth-fastest aboard the BMW S1000RR, with M4 Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas lapping at an identical pace – the duo a full second behind the leader. JD Beach, running in the Superbike class now aboard the Cycle World Attack Performance Kawasaki, was seventh-fastest.

The AMA Pro Road Racing American SuperBike field will get a final qualifying session on Sunday to sort out the grid for Monday’s 16-lap race.
