Corey Alexander took the win in the Motorcycle Superstore SuperSport class at Miller Motorsports Park.
Corey Alexander claimed his first-ever AMA win at Miller Motorsports Park. The Vesrah Suzuki rider mastered the wet conditions at the Utah circuit to claim victory in the 13-lap
Motorcycle-Superstore SuperSport race. Joining Alexander on the SuperSport podium were David Gaviria and Travis Ohge.
Erion Honda’s Benny Solis, who had led the Superstore SuperSport sessions all weekend, turned his pole position into a holeshot down the MMP start-finish straight. But things went south for Solis shortly thereafter, getting challenged by LTD Yamaha’s Gaviria and then becoming the first of many SS riders to lose traction and fly off-track into the saturated trackside terrain.
Teammates Gaviria and Tomas Puerta inherited the lead, followed by Alexander in third. The Vesrah Suzuki youngster soon moved up front, however, as Solis returned to the track, his Honda dripping with mud and debris.
Alexander soon got around the two Yamahas to snatch the lead, though Gaviria managed to regain the front position down the straight on beginning of Lap 3. Alexander retook the front, however, and soon opened up a wide 20-second gap.
As the front runner gained ground, Gairia rode a steady, unchallenged second. Behind the Colombian rider, Ohge and Puerta had a great scrap over the final podium spot. The Oregon native, Oghe, would eventually get the better fellow R6-mounted rival – the Pacific Northwest resident quite familiar with wet roads.
Behind the front four, Elena Myers took her Suzuki to solid fifth. As for Solis, the double-winner and points leader coming into Miller ended the race 20th on the final results, having crashed once again after rejoining the race after his first-lap getoff.
The incident-filled SuperSport race featured a number of crashes. Walter Dimmick lost the front on the warm-up lap, hinting the race would be crash-filled. As Solis binned twice, a total of at least 10 fellow competitors went down in the race. Amazingly, there was no red-flag stoppage during the 13-lap contest.
