AMA Road Racing Road America Friday 2011

Josh Hayes
Yamaha's Josh Hayes claimed the fastest lap on Friday with a time of 2’12.869.
The AMA Superbike road racing series made its annual stop at Wisconsin’s Road America road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Friday’s on-track action consisted of both practice and qualifying for the AMA Superbike class, Daytona Sportbike and Motorcycle-Superstore.com Supersport classes.

Monster Yamaha’s Josh Hayes ended the day fastest in the Superbike class with a lap time of 2’12.869 which was just under a half a second faster than local boy and Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider Blake Young. Young’s teammate Tommy Hayden was just a hair off his time putting him in the third. It’s a bit of a surprise to see Hayes atop the time sheets this early and it seems like his Yamaha team has found some extra horsepower which is definitely needed due to Road America’s extremely high-speed layout. Class rookie Martin Cardenas also got down to business right away and came away with the fourth fastest time. Motorcycle USA’s guest sportbike test rider Steve Rapp finished 10th fastest aboard a Lees Cycle-prepped BMW S1000RR.

Jason DiSalvo and his Latus Motors-powered Ducati 848 EVO are again shaping up to be the team to beat this weekend with DiSalvo ending the day in the top spot courtesy of his lap time of 2’20.356. Road America has not one, not two, but three long sixth gear pinned straight-aways that put his big-bore Ducati engine to good use. Yamaha’s Josh Herrin was just a few tenths of a second off DiSalvo while Suzuki rider Danny Eslick was almost one second adrift of DiSalvo’s time.

In the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Supersport class LTD Yamaha’s Tomas Puerta is just over a second faster than Travis Wyman which allowed him to take provisional pole. David Gaviria, Hayden Gillim, and James Rispoli were all hot in pursuit with lap times all in the 2’24-range which should make for excellent racing come Saturday. In other news
Jason DiSalvo
Jason DiSalvo once again dominated the Daytona Sportbike class more than a second ahead of Suzuki's Danny Eslick.
Suzuki’s Elena Myers is back in action this weekend finishing 13th some five seconds adrift of the leader.
