Danny Eslick won his first race of the season and trails Cory West by just one point in the Daytona SportBike series.
Geico Suzuki’s Danny Eslick became the first rider in the Daytona SportBike series other than Josh Herrin or Jason DiSalvo to claim a win this season. Eslick won the first race at Barber Motorsports Park by nearly three seconds ahead of M4 Suzuki’s Dane Westby, with Vesrah Suzuki’s Cory West just outpacing Yamaha Extended Service/Pat Clark Sports’ Tommy Aquino for the final podium position.

Eslick shot off to an excellent start from pole position ahead of PJ Jacobsen. It would be the only time that Jacobsen would have sight of the leader, however, as the Celtic rider crashed on the second lap followed shortly after by another crash involving GP Bike Parts Racing’s Cameron Beaubier. After the damage cleared, it was Eslick leading DiSalvo and Herrin as an excellent battle took form between the three frontrunners. Herrin’s race quickly came to an end though when he suffered a mechanical failure. The Graves Yamaha rider slapped his tank in fury as he was forced to retire early to the pits. With just five laps counted Dirk Sanchez, Jacobsen, Paul Allison, Matt Hall and Herrin were all out of the race.

DiSalvo eagerly resumed in second as the top-four riders became separated by less than a second. It was coming down to either Eslick or DiSalvo for the win when DiSalvo suddenly dropped back. Meanwhile Aquino began a charge toward the front. After getting around DiSalvo and Westby for third, Aquino was re-passed by DiSalvo while Eslick continued to gain momentum in the lead. As the laps ticked by Eslick’s lead stretched to more than three seconds while a major battle erupted between Aquino and Westby.

The duo swapped positions back and forth while moving toward the front of the field ahead of DiSalvo. With the white flag out the runner-up position was down to Aquino, Westby and West with all three riders neck and neck. Despite holding a slight advantage on the final lap, Aquino lost the podium when both Westby and West made passes. Eslick claimed his first win of the season well ahead of the competition, while DiSalvo crossed the line more than half a second behind Aquino in fifth.

"It's been a tough season so far," said Eslick."It means a lot to get this win ... it's pretty awesome. I could see the numbers on the scoring tower changing position, [and] I kept seeing different numbers in second, so I knew they were racing pretty hard back there. I just didn't want to do anything crazy and mess up."

"It's awesome," said West. "I can't thank the Vesrah guys enough. Now we just have to try to push on and get another podium tomorrow."
