Tommy Aquino (#6) was there to taste victory when Dane Westby crashed out of the lead on the final lap.
The first Daytona SportBike race at New Jersey featured one of the fiercest battles of the season with Yamaha Extended Service/Pat Clark Sports’ Tommy Aquino nabbing the victory on the final lap. Monster Energy Graves Yamaha’s Josh Herrin secured second in the battle just 0.113 seconds behind, with Riders Discount/Jake Holden Racing’s Cameron Beaubier grabbing a top-three finish only 0.030 seconds behind.

"Those last four or five laps," said Aquino, "I kind of put it in my head that that was the best chance I had [to win a race]. I really didn't know who was behind me, I just focused on Dane at first and then just on getting a clean lap. I thought, 'You're a professional -- do one lap, how hard can it be?' Very hard, if you're wondering. It was a great weekend, and I have to thank the Yamaha Extended Service crew -- this win is for them."

Herrin claimed the lead on the first lap ahead of Beaubier, Aquino, RMR Suzuki’s Danny Eslick, Celtic Racing’s PJ Jacobsen and Vesrah Suzuki’s Taylor Knapp. The first few laps were pretty hectic up front as riders fought for position - the top-six riders separated by less than a second. Knapp grabbed fifth ahead of Jacobsen as Beaubier remained only 0.047 seconds behind Herrin. Further back Westby advanced up to seventh following his pass on Paul Allison. Shortly after Aquino stole the runner-up position from Beaubier, but it wasn’t the last time fans would see the pair mix it up. As the race progressed competition only increased as less than half a second covered the top-seven riders.

Another battle erupted for second between Eslick and Aquino that lasted for quite a few laps. On Lap 12 Allison crashed out of the race, with Bryce Prince also going down a few laps later. On Lap 18 Herrin had his lead taken away for the first time by Aquino as Eslick, Westby, Herrin and Beaubier rounded out the top-five with less than four laps to go.

The entire race came down to the final laps when Westby snatched the lead away from Aquino. The Italian was trailing Westby by less than 0.009 seconds when the 24-year-old crashed out of the lead on the final lap. Aquino was handed the victory after posting one of his best rides of the season to stay in the lead group. Meanwhile Beaubier also had one of his best finishes of the season in third, followed by Vesrah Suzuki’s Cory West and Knapp.
