Roadracingworld.com's Benny Solis wins the 18-lap AMA Supersport Race 1 at Infineon.
Roadracingworld.com’s Benny Solis put in a dominant performance winning Saturday’s
Motorcycle-Superstore.com Supersport Race 1 over Tomas Puerta and David Gaviria. Solis win is the first of his career and the first for Honda since 2009.
At the start of the 18-lap Puerta jumped the start and was assessed a five-second penalty (as opposed to a traditional stop-and-go ride through penalty). Solis quickly stole the position away from Puerta and at the same time Corey Alexander moved into third.
“Yes I was really trying to get another holeshot for this year,” said Puerta. “I knew it would be important to get to the podium. I moved on the start but when they said the new rules in the riders meeting I knew they were going to take five-second off my time. I did a big mistake going down the hill. I really wanted to finish the race.”
The running order was much of the same for the majority of the race until right at the end when Alexander passed Gaviria for second position. After the race Solis did a number of burnouts and was very excited to have collected his first-ever Supersport win.
“I didn’t even know he jumped the start so I thought ‘man he’s on it’,” said Solis. I just kept putting in my laps and finding some time here and there. I started slowing down toward the end of the race to keep it on two wheels. We came here with a strong set-up and to take the win is really special.”
