Misano to be Renamed in Simoncelli's Honor

Marco Simoncelli - Brno 2011
Misano World Circuit will be renamed Marco Simoncelli World Circuit in his honor.
On Thursday the board of directors of the Misano World Circuit announced that the name of the track will be changed to Marco Simoncelli World Circuit in honor of the fallen Italian MotoGP Hero. Misano was the home track of Super Sic, as he grew up and lived nearby in the town of Coriano. The change was unanimously agreed upon by the board.

“We owe it to the memory of Sic, to his family and to the hundreds of thousands of fans who admired his courage and humanity, and to the many sports and media personalities that gave voice to this spontaneous and moving request,” said Luca Colaiacovo, President of Santamonica SpA. “We are happy and proud to associate Misano with Marco Simoncelli, a champion in sport and in life.”

The name change will take some time as the board seeks to find a way to rename the track with Simoncelli’s name in branding and marketing to show the utmost respect and not to convey an image of cashing in on the charismatic rider’s name.

Additionally, Simoncelli’s number will be retired after the final round in Valencia, but not before Loris Capirossi dons the number 58 on his Pramac Ducati instead of his personal number 65. Capirossi will also retire when the checkers wave at Valencia after a 22-season MotoGP career.

if they do this with class, it will be a nice gesture.
