The Always Quotable Colin Edwards

Friday, July 27, 2012
“My bike’s a piece of shit, that’s a better way to say it.”

Colin Edwards spiced up the customary pre-event press conference at Laguna Seca with that rather curt assessment of his fortunes this season. The two-time World Superbike Champion and veteran Grand Prix competitor then delivered a PR performance that proves why he’s such a fan favorite.

As reported by MotoUSA media partner Cycle News, Mr. Edwards didn’t mince words, at all, about his opinion on the BMW/Suter CRT mount or of the CRT rules in general. (Colin Edwards: Bike's Crap, Rules Suck) After kicking things off with the POS descriptor of his CRT ride, Edwards also critiqued the current CRT concept with painfully plain speaking as “just kind of a bullshit rule.”

It’s no surprise that the official MotoGP release for the press conference omitted all of Edwards’ comments, save for mentioning his confirmation of a possible switch to the Aprilia-based ART design. The sanitizing effect of the PR machinery was another topic at the Laguna press conference too, with Ben Spies opening up the Q&A session, and eliciting laughter, by telling to his fellow Texan: “You must have a really good press officer.”

Edwards’ quotes in the Forward Racing press releases of late have been remarkably frank, at least by PR standards, expressing obvious frustration with the CRT machine's performance limits. One wonders what the Forward PR staffer has to work with before sending out the final draft…

Another Edwards highlight at yesterday’s Laguna press conference included his half-joking prediction of his former teammates’ plans for next year – with Spies racing the Tour de France (the joke) and Valentino Rossi returning to the factory Yamaha.

Expect more sleepless nights from the Forward Racing press officer, as the always quotable Colin Edwards gets to work at Laguna Seca.
