Honda's Eli Tomac continued to set the bar in the Lites class after winning his second race of the season in Oakland.
The 2012 Western Regional AMA Supercross
Lites Class kicked off action in the Bay Area with Geico Honda
’s Eli Tomac taking his second consecutive victory of the season at Oakland’s Overstock.com Stadium. Finishing more than 12 seconds ahead of the field, Tomac grabbed an early lead and never looked back as Red Bull KTM
’s Marvin Musquin staged a terrific performance while fighting from behind to finish second. The podium was rounded out by MonsterEnergy Yamaha
’s Zach Osborne, who finished on the podium for the second time this season less than two seconds behind Musquin.
Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Martin Davalos
obtained another strong start during the main followed by Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson
, Tomac and TLD Honda’s Cole Seely. The night quickly went bad for Wilson as the Scotsman crashed on the opening lap, burying himself deep inside the pack. Seely also hit the deck in the opening laps which put him outside the top-15 as Tomac secured the lead from Davalos on the second lap. Meanwhile the field was missing one of its biggest competitors, Kawasaki’s Tyla Rattray
, due to the South African suffering a heavy crash during his heat race.
Five laps into the contest Tomac was looking comfortable out front as Davalos was shadowed by Osborne in second. Despite having to start from 18th, Wilson began to charge through the field while Tomac began putting in some fast laps to increase his lead. JDR/Jstar KTM’s Matt Moss and Star Valli Yamaha’s Ryan Sipes trailed the frontrunners in fourth and fifth respectively, with Moss posting his best performance of 2012 inside the top-five. Davalos eventually made a mistake which allowed Osborne by for second. With more than five laps to go Tomac’s lead was up to more than six seconds and increasing as Davalos stayed
KTM's Marvin Musquin had a mediocre start but had an impressive night in Oakland after finishing second.
in close contact with Osborne. Despite a strong charge inside the top-five by Rockstar Energy Suzuki
’s Jason Anderson, a crash on Lap 11 forced him out of third. Anderson was then replaced by Musquin, who appeared out of nowhere after getting a mediocre start to claim the final podium spot.
After successfully fighting off Davalos, Osborne encountered a strong threat from Musquin as the Frenchman pressed ahead. With just three laps left Musquin swept past Osborne for second as Wilson and Seely began to reach the top-10. At the checkers Tomac’s official win was recorded 12.299 seconds ahead of Musquin after the Honda rider posted the fastest lap of the main for the fourth consecutive round.
“This is my best season ever,” said Tomac. “Our team worked really hard to give me a great bike, and I made the most of it. I now have a nice lead going into Anaheim.”
Meanwhile Musquin rebounded from his crash in L.A. with a strong comeback here in Oakland to stay in the title hunt. In addition to Osborne’s second straight podium result, the night was also good for Sipes, who redeemed himself with a fourth-place result after finishing outside the top-10 in the previous round.
