Houston Supercross Lites Results 2012

Saturday, March 31, 2012
Justin Barcia suffered a disappointing loss when a lapper ran into him on the last lap.
Justin Barcia led until the final lap when he ran into a lapped rider and crashed. He still holds a comfortable lead in the Eastern Lites Championship.
The Monster Energy AMA Supercross Eastern Region Lites took to the track in Houston with Geico Honda’s Justin Barcia looking to re-establish himself as the dominant 250F rider. With a healthy lead in the championship race, Barcia looked ready to claim another victory as he holeshot the main event, gave up the position and then retook the lead from Red Bull KTM rider Ken Roczen and started pulling away.

Roczen did his best to keep in touch with the CRF250R pilot, but was losing ground on every lap. All he could hope for was a mistake, and that’s exactly what he got on the final lap. Barcia got held up by a lapper, calmly working his way around Lance Vincent, but the KTM rider pulled a bonehead move and jumped into the defending champ's rear wheel. Both riders crashed which allowed the Roczen to retake the point position and snare his first victory of the season. Barcia remounted and finished in the runner-up spot.
Ken Roczen scored his first win of the year for Red Bull KTM.
Ken Roczen scored his first victory of 2012 in Houston.

“I don’t know what I can say,” said Barcia. “There is nothing I could do about the crash. I will fight through this and be back in New Orleans.”

Third went to Monster Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett who started the race outside the top-five but was able to reach podium contention by Lap 3. He put a pass on Blake Wharton by hammering down the inside of the whoop section to knock the Suzuki rider off the box. Baggett closed up to the rear wheel of Roczen as the German struggled horribly through the whoops, but could never make the pass. Wharton would hold on for fourth with Phil Nicoletti rounding the top-five on his Honda.

Barcia still holds the championship lead with 167 points. Wharton trails with 135 on the year and Roczen climbed to within eight points of the long-haired Suzuki rider.

Barcia 1 Roczen 70 and Wharton 956 were at the top of the Lites class all night.
Barcia (1), Roczen (70) and Wharton (956) were at the top of the Lites class all night, but Malcolm Stewart and Darryn Durham (below) struggled.
Malcolm Stewart had a forgettable night in Texas.Things couldnt have gone much worse for Darryn Durham in Texas. The Monster PC Kawasaki rider qualified through the LCQ and then labored to the back of the pack in the main event.
“This is so awesome,” said Roczen. “This is not how I want to win a race. Justin rode a great race and was really fast tonight, so it is unfortunate that he crashed. I am super happy to be back on top of the box.”

Malcolm Stewart finished way back in 16th and Darryn Durham, who was forced to qualify through the LCQ, was 17th. The poor result for Durham significantly damages his title hopes and he now holds down fourth overall with 118 points.
