Husqvarna Concept BAJA First Look

An updated Husqvarna Concept BAJA was revealed during the 2012 EICMA show in Milan.
Complete with headlights and turn signals, the Husqvarna Concept BAJA has a number of features to suggest it's close to becoming a production model.
Husqvarna showcased the Concept BAJA during the 2012 EICMA show in Milan, following in the footsteps of the similarly styled Concept MOAB debuted in 2011. The BAJA is Husky’s modern interpretation of the scramblers popular in the 60’s and 70’s, with notable influence coming from the Husqvarna Cross 400, which was featured on the cover of the August 23, 1971 edition of Sports Illustrated. Steve McQueen piloted the Cross 400 in the photo, helping to add to the popular appeal and allure of the off-road motorcycling scene.

MotoUSA got a first look at the BAJA in early 2012 and the mechanical features remain largely the same. The biggest changes come with the addition of a headlight as well as front and rear turn signals, suggesting this concept is a much more accurate representation of a production model to come. They’ve also removed the skid plate seen on the model earlier in 2012, meaning that without some after-market upgrades the BAJA is geared more toward dual-sport road duty than any heavy off-roading. Husqvarna hints in press material that the BAJA “offers an insight into how the Husqvarna Motorcycles model range might be extended in the future.” The EICMA BAJA also shows dual exhaust pipes jutting off the back-end, which is a change from the model shown previously, and it retains the signature right-side chain drive unique to BMW/Husqvarna motorcycles.

Simple instrumentation and a narrow seat align the Husqvarna Concept BAJA with scrambler models from the 1960s and 70s.
The BAJA is powered by a liquid-cooled 650cc Single and comes with a five-speed gearbox while the chassis is based on a steel tube frame design. Braking is handled by Brembo hydraulic units on the front and back, and rear suspension is marked by a dual swingarm that comes with a central spring strut. The 19-inch spoke front and 17-inch spoke rear wheels help to make the BAJA Concept ready for the occasional light jaunt off-road.

Simple instrumentation lends to the stripped-down retro look of the BAJA while the dual exhaust pipes give it a symmetrical and powerful look from behind. Concave portions of the fuel tank and the sharp front and rear fenders align the Concept BAJA with styling seen in more recent offerings, like the TR650.

There is no information yet on when or if the Concept BAJA will become available to the public and no indication of what the MSRP might be.
