High Point 250 Motocross Results 2012

Eli Tomac scored the overall 250 win going 2-1.
Eli Tomac dug deep in Moto 2 to take a last minute win from the hands of KTM rider Ken Roczen.
Geico Honda’s Justin Barcia won Moto 1 at the FMF High Point National on Saturday, his second first-place moto finish of the season. Teammate Eli Tomac followed Barcia in second place, holding off pressure from Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett who took third.

Barcia had pulled a wide gap by mid-race, but saw that gap close a bit toward the end as Tomac and Bagget continued to push each other. The Kawasaki rider faced another terrible start, having to fight up through the pack from 11th and ended with the best lap time, posted on Lap 15 of 16. Geico Honda’s Wil Hahn held podium position for much of the race but was eventually relegated to fourth, over 28 seconds off the lead. Red Bull KTM's Ken Roczen was unable to keep pace with the Honda riders and Baggett, taking fifth over 40 seconds off the lead.

Rockstar Energy Suzuk's Blake Wharton came out strong in Moto 1 running in fourth, but went down early and settled for 16th by the checkers. JDR's Malcom Stewart suffered a similar fate, coming out early looking stronger than he has all season only to fall out of the race.

Tomac came out the victor in Moto 2 after an incredibly intense battle for podium position. Roczen lost his lead after falling in the final laps of the race and took second with Barcia rounding out the podium in third. Halfway through the race, Tomac was fourth behind Roczen, Barcia and Baggett. Baggett made a pass for second but soon after went down, falling to fourth. Tomac and Barcia moved into podium position and the teammates fought one another until Tomac finally got the best of JB and took second. He then had to close a sizeable gap before catching Roczen, who had led since taking the holeshot.

“That second moto was a lot of work,” said Tomac. “I never really gave in and kept fighting. Kenny (Roczen) had that mistake, so I ended up getting a chance for the win and I capitalized on it. I really think it was one of the best rides I’ve ever had because I had to come from so far behind. I think I was about sixth or seventh out of the gate.”

Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin benefitted from Baggett’s second spill, which sent the Kawasaki rider to sixth and Musquin up to fourth. The KX250F pilot battled back and was able round out the top-five before the checkers, getting past Suzuki’s Jason Anderson in the final minutes of the race.

Though Baggett didn't earn a first-place finish, he remains at the top of the points sheet. The Kawasaki rider has only missed one podium so far this year. Barcia stays steady in second; Tomac and Roczen traded places after High Point, with the KTM rider falling to fourth overall as Tomac continues his charge toward the top.
