Ryan Dungey fell in Moto 2 and lost his gas cap. He later had to pit and refuel.
Ryan Dungey protected his points lead by taking the top spot in Moto 1 at the Moto-X 338 National in Southwick.
Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey took the win in Moto 1 at the Moto-X 338 National in Southwick, Massachusetts as rain began to soak the sand track. MotoConcepts' Mike Alessi followed in second and Muscle Milk Honda’s Tommy Hahn rounded out the podium. Local rider Robbie Marshall of Munn Racing looked at home all moto, holding steady in fourth to the finish and was followed by L&MC Racing’s Andrew Short in fifth.

Alessi and Dungey put themselves out front early on, avoiding a pile-up just after the start that put a number of riders including Hahn’s teammate Justin Brayton and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Tyla Rattray in the back of the pack. Alessi held the lead for most of the first half of the contest, but Dungey kept close and found an inside line mid-moto, taking the lead and building a gap that was over 16 seconds by the checkers.

Hahn and Marshall settled into their finishing positions mid-moto as well, with Marshall looking comfortable in the sand. Monster Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Broc Tickle followed Short in sixth, with JGRMX Yamaha’s Davi Millsaps taking seventh in his return to motocross competition. Jeff Ward Racing’s Josh Grant held to eighth, followed by Factory FMF/KTM’s Mike Brown in ninth.

Local motocross hero John Dowd of Chaplin Kawasaki battled his way up to tenth after starting way back in the field. He only needed to earn two more points in Moto 2 to retain his number 16 plate.

In an absolutely stunning Moto 2, Rattray muscled his way to the top step, earning his first 450 class victory. Dungey came in a close second and Alessi followed in third.

Tyla Rattray earned his first 450 class win of the season in Moto 2 at Southwick.
Tyla Rattray took the lead late in Moto 2 and earned his first 450 class win of the season at the Moto-X 338 National.
Early in the moto Dungey took his familiar position at the head of the pack, building a gap on Alessi and looking like he would secure a second moto win. Half-way into the moto though, Dungey cross-rutted and went down, losing his gas cap and a fair amount of gas. Alessi blew past and Dungey was able to recover and settle back into second and soon after passed the Suzuki rider to regain the lead. He’d lost too much gas though and in the final minutes of the moto had to pit and refuel. All the while, Rattray had been charging forward and had gotten ahead of Alessi for the number two spot. Once Dungey headed to the pit, Rattray took over the lead and was able to hold for the remaining three and a half laps to the checkers.

"I got a little bit of a lead and felt like I was in a groove, said Dungey. "Coming to the finish, my rear stepped to the right, hooked the jump, and made me cross rut. I tried to save it, but it took me right down. When I fell, I think I kicked the gas cap off. I got back into the lead, but I kept worrying if I had enough left.

"The TV footage allowed our guys to see what happened, which helped them decide to bring me in, which worked out because I wouldn't have made another lap. I tried to catch (Tyla Rattray), but he's a great sand rider. I'm bummed I made a mistake, but given the situation, things couldn't have worked out better."

Tickle took fourth ahead of BTO Sports’ Michael Byrne, who took fifth. Millsaps made it up to sixth with Brown following in seventh. All four riders battled the entire moto with one another, exchanging positions a number of times before the checkers. Byrne and Brown came out early and squared-off for fourth place, then both fell back as Rattray threaded though the pack. Byrne was as far back as ninth as one point but was able to rally and take one of his best finishes of the season. Millsaps was back in tenth through the first half of the moto but was able to make his way up as well. All four riders were helped after Hahn went down in the second half of the moto in nearly the same spot at Dungey. The Honda rider had been in contention for a podium finish, but had to pull out of the race after his crash.

Dowd made it up to 16th place after running in 25th early in the moto, securing the points he neeed to retain his plate for next season.

Dungey held on to the overall and extended his points lead to 85 over Alessi. Weimer's 13-19 finish kept him secure in third overall with Short holding steady in fourth. Tickle remains fifth in points and Grant moved past Brayton into sixth overall.
