Eli Tomac swept both 250 motos at Steel City and moved to second in overall points, 14 off the leader, Blake Baggett.
Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac scored a big win in 250 Moto 1 at Steel City, capturing the front in the final laps of the contest after passing teammate Justin Barcia
. Barcia came off the start and commanded the front for most of the race, but the pressure remained intense as Tomac never allowed much of a gap to develop. Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen rounded out the podium.
Once out of the gate, the top five riders settled into position and held steady with little movement apart from Tomac’s pass for the win. Monster Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett
held to fourth comfortably ahead of Roczen’s teammate Marvin Musquin in fifth.
JDR’s Malcolm Stewart pushed up to sixth mid-moto and built a gap of over 12 seconds on Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Blake Wharton
, who took seventh. Eleven10 Mods’ Alex Martin finished in eighth with Geico Honda’s Wil Hahn
in ninth and Star Valli Yamaha’s Kyle Cunningham rounding out the top-10.
Tomac dominated Moto 2, winning by over 10 seconds ahead of Roczen and holding the lead nearly uncontested for the majority of the contest. Barcia rounded out the podium over seven seconds ahead of Baggett in fourth.
"It was the best day I could ask for," said Tomac. "I came and did what I needed to do, and now I'm within a moto of the points lead. Justin (Barcia) and I definitely got close out there (in the first moto), but we are just trying to chase Blake (Baggett) right now, so there isn't a lot of tension between us. I've gotten good starts (recently), and I think these are the best starts I've had all season. I think that's what the difference was today. I'm one of those guys that likes to get out front early and set that pace."
Tomac, Roczen and Barcia settled into the top three spots early on and held steady to the end. Baggett, on the other hand, had a difficult start and was back in eighth through the first lap. He quickly battled up to sixth and then picked off Geico Honda’s Justin Bogle and Musquin to settle into fourth. The French rider finished in fifth and Bogle slipped behind his teammate Hahn to finish in seventh. Jeremy Martin took eighth ahead of his brother Alex and MotoConcepts’ Jake Canada rounded out the top-10.
Baggett remains the points leader 14 ahead of Tomac, who moved past his teammate Barcia into second. Just four points separate the two Geico Honda riders. Roczen holds to fourth, 27 points behind Barcia.
