Rispoli nabs the opening win of his Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport title defense - Race 1 Daytona
James Rispoli claimed the first win of the 2012 Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport series ahead of Jake Lewis.
Celtic Racing Orient Express rider James Rispoli claimed victory in the Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport series opener at Daytona. The GSX-R600 pilot snared the checkers in a tight race that saw the top seven riders finish within a second of each other. Rispoli nipped SuperSport rookie Jake Lewis (Vesrah Suzuki) by half a bike length for the win. Stefano Mesa edged out fellow R6 rider Tomas Puerta for the final podium position.

Rispoli and Lewis battled right off the start, with Suzuki’s Elena Myers also in the mix during the opening laps. While Myers began to fade in the running order, an eight-rider group was in the mix heading into the final lap.

The front-running Lewis and Rispoli gained some separation, with Rispoli taking the victory by a mere 0.031. “Daytona’s always a chess match and we found out quick that it was going to be seven of us running around,” said Rispoli. “Coming into the last lap I took a look back and saw seven of us, going into the chicane nobody was coming around so I said ‘let’s go for it.’”

“We got lucky with a lapper,” continued Rispoli. “He really just got me a super draft on the front. I snuck by him and went straight low and held in as tight as possible. I didn’t see anyone come around and I was screaming right through the checkered flag.”

Motorcycle-Superstore.com rider and Motorcycle USA contributor Devon McDonough finished 24th in his SuperSport rookie debut.
