Martin Cardenas taking the checkered flag in Race 2 at Road Atlanta.
Cardenas went undefeated at Road Atlanta.
Geico Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas took his second Daytona SportBike win of the season in Race 2 at Road Atlanta. Yamaha rider Tommy Hayden kept pressure on Cardenas throughout but couldn’t pass the Suzuki ace and had to settle for second. Rounding out the podium was M4 Broaster Chicken Suzuki’s Dane Westby coming in third.

The race began with a battle between Cardenas, Hayden, Zemke, Team Latus Motors Racing’s Jason DiSalvo and Road Race Factory’s Jake Gagne. DiSalvo’s hopes for a win were shot when he suffered a mechanical issue halfway through the race and had to pit.  Before loosing position though, DiSalvo posted what would be the fastest lap time of the entire race at 1:29.044. Once the Triumph rider fell back, the race was a face off between Cardenas and Hayden.

"Tommy was on my back the entire race and he wasn't backing up," said Cardenas. "Two laps to the end we found some lappers. I was in front so I passed them first and they held him a little bit. It gave me a little gap and it was enough to secure the position and win the race."

Zemke tried to rally toward the end of the race for his first podium with Ducshop Racing, finishing only 0.040 seconds behind Westby in fourth place. Zemke was the only other rider to officially lead a lap during the contest.

Gagne trailed 22 second behind Cardenas to finish fifth, followed by Meen Motorsports Bobby Fong in sixth and Road Race Factory/Red Bull rider JD Beach in seventh. Daytona 200 winner Joey Pascarella rounded out the top 10.

Westby and Hayden bumped Pascarella from second in overall points to fourth after Race 2 and riders like Zemke, Fong and Gagne all fared better than the Daytona winner. If Pascarella doesn't regain some of his Daytona momentum he may find himself out of the top ten overall riders very soon as Zemke is just four points shy of JP's spot. DiSalvo will need to rally big during the next race in Califorina, but he has the skill to do so and become a points contender as well. His unfortunate performance at Road Atlanta will most likely be just a bump in  the road. All eyes are on Cardenas though after his epic weekend. The Columbian rider was relentless in both races and will definitely be a force to be reconed with as the season progresses.
