SportBike Road America Race 1 Results 2012

Martin Cardenas came from behind after a bad start in Daytona SportBike Race 1 to score the win.
Martin Cardenas prevailed after a difficult start left him out of the top ten. The Colombian rallied and won Race 1.
Martin Cardenas claimed his fifth Daytona SportBike victory of the season, with the Geico Suzuki rider coming out on top at Road America on Saturday. Yamaha’s Cameron Beaubier scored second-place and was followed by Team Latus Motors Racing’s Jason DiSalvo in third. M4 Suzuki’s Dane Westby was edged off the podium by a mere 0.101 seconds and took fourth at the checkers while Meen Motorsports Racing’s Bobby Fong rounded out the top five.

Race 1 opened with DiSalvo and Beaubier trading position at the front a number of times, followed by Fong in third. Cardenas had a terrible start and had to work up from mid-pack during the opening laps, but had pushed his way up to fourth-place after Lap 3. It wasn’t long after that the Colombian made it into podium range and began to battle with DiSalvo, Beaubier and Westby. Over the course of the rest of the race, positions changed with every lap until Cardenas began to develop a slight gap out front with two laps remaining.

"My start wasn't great," said Cardenas. "I worked my way up. The bike was very fast and handling perfect. I saw the sky and thought it might rain soon, so I moved to the front as soon as I could. It was my plan."

Beaubier, DiSalvo and Westby continued to quarrel for second position. With three laps to go, the M4 Suzuki ace moved past DiSalvo and Beaubier blew a corner which sent him from second to fourth. Westby couldn't maintain his podium position though as the Yamaha rider recovered and pushed back up the ranks. DiSalvo nearly lost his rostrum spot, coming in just 0.101 ahead of Westby.

Fong, who posted the fastest lap of the race, couldn’t quite cut the gap to challenge with the four-rider battle up front and finished fifth. Ducshop Racing’s Jake Zemke opened the race fighting for podium position but fell back as the contest intensified.

Cardenas remains at the top of the Daytona SportBike championship points list. Previous second-place rider, Tommy Hayden of Yamaha Extended Service, had a dismal showing in Race 1, earning 12th place and falling down to fourth in points behind DiSalvo and Westby. Even though Beaubier missed both Road Atlanta rounds, he sits in ninth place and has big numbers to his credit when he is able to compete.
