Jake Lewis made a late race pass for the win in Race 1 of AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport at Barber.
Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki’s Jake Lewis took the win in AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport Race 1 at Barber Motorsports Park on Saturday. The Kentucky native displaced Castrol Triumph's Dustin Dominguez on the final lap, leaving Dominguez short of the victory he was on pace to earn after posting the fastest qualifying and practice laps in the class. Celtic Racing’s James Rispoli rounded out the podium, over 12 seconds behind the front-runners.

Lewis made it out front early, but lost the lead to Dominguez who posted what would become the fastest lap of the entire contest on his second time around the track. The Triumph rider couldn’t shake Lewis though; the Suzuki ace remained within fractions of a second behind Dominguez. In the final laps Lewis continued gaining speed through the segments, cutting the gap between himself and DD to a paper-thin margin and ultimately passing for the win.

"I just settled in and saw what the pace was going to be and tried to manage my tires to save them for the end," Lewis said. "Dustin ended up breaking away a little bit. I set my eyes on him and he was running really good. He had a little gap but I slowly reeled him in, bit by bit and was right there on him. With two laps to go I passed him and we had a good little battle for a bit and then on the last lap I really put my head down."

Rispoli and RoadRace Factory’s Hayden Gillim were caught in the fray out front in the opening laps, but a mechanical failure on the Yamaha YZF-R6 took Gillim out of the race. Rispoli was unable to keep pace in the contest for first, but held comfortably to third with little challenge from the field behind.

Kneedragger.com’s Stefano Mesa trailed Rispoli by over seven seconds in fourth and National Guard Suzuki’s Corey Alexander earned points in fifth.

This is the second round of the season in which both Eastern and Western division riders earn points toward the championship, coming off three consecutive West division rounds. Lewis remains in the lead in the East at 112 over Stefano Mesa at 85 in second. Rispoli continues to lead the West division at 202 followed by Gillim in second at 155.
