SuperBike New Jersey Race 1 Results 2012

Saturday, September 8, 2012
Josh Hayes posted a perfect weekend at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
Josh Hayes was once again all alone out front in AMA Pro SuperBike action, winning Race 1 at New Jersey.
Monster Energy Graves Yamaha’s Josh Hayes decimated the AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike field in Race 1 at New Jersey Motorsports Park. The Mississippi native got out front early and never looked back, leaving the battle for second over 22 seconds behind by the checkers. Jordan Suzuki’s Ben Bostrom had one of his best performances all season, battling from outside the top seven to take his first podium of the season in second. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Blake Young was just 0.052 seconds back in third.

"What can I say? Things are going pretty good," Hayes said. "The bike is an incredible machine. The R1 has been treating me good for a long time and this has been a good race track for me with that bike."

While Hayes was running off into a different time-zone, the race for second was intense. Young and Attack Performance/Motorcycle-Superstore.com’s Steve Rapp faced off through the opening laps behind Hayes. Rapp was just two laps into the contest when he crashed out and was forced to retire. Rider Discount’s Taylor Knapp moved up as did Team Amsoil/Herlo’s Geoff May and his Team Hero teammate Danny Eslick. The three riders were on Young’s rear tire for a number of laps until Bostrom showed up and started to pick them off one at a time. Once into third, Bostrom rode patiently behind Young until a passing line opened with 3 laps remaining.

"It was entertaining," said Bostrom. "I saw Josh was going and these guys were battling up there. It allowed me to catch up. My Jordan Motorsports bike was really good today. We need to get a good start tomorrow and see what we can do against the 'blue streak.' Josh is riding incredibly. We'll try to hang with him tomorrow."

Knapp managed to hold to fourth and was followed by Hayes’ teammate Josh Herrin, who staged a come-from-behind performance of his own. The Yamaha rider was well outside the top ten through the opening laps, but through the course of the contest weaved his way up to sixth where he held until the final laps. He closed a five second gap and got past May into fifth in the last moments of the race.

Foremost Insurance’s Larry Pegram took seventh with KTM’s Chris Fillmore in eighth and National Guard Jordan Suzuki’s Roger Hayden in ninth. Fillmore had been out of competition rehabilitating an injury and Race 1 marked his first time back on track since the incident. Hayden pushed hard for position and made it up to sixth at one point, but was unable to hold and slipped back in the face of heavy pressure. Kneedraggers.com’s David Anthony rounded out the top ten.
